The present study scrutinizes Korean college students’ dictionary use in pursuit of formulating teaching implications. Investigation of dictionary use is worthwhile since a dictionary is a Korean learners’ main source for learning L2 vocabulary and not many studies have been conducted in this area. A total of 436 Korean college students taking an English reading course participated in the survey study on dictionary use. Results revealed the following: First, students used more than one dictionary and 82 percent of them possessed an electronic dictionary. About 43 percent used an electronic dictionary and 34 percent used a cellular phone dictionary. Second, 78 percent used an English-Korean dictionary, 14 percent used an English-English dictionary, and 8 percent used an English-English-Korean dictionary. Third, 68 percent of English-Korean dictionary users always looked up definitions. Around 50 percent of English-English or English-English-Korean dictionary users always looked up definitions. Around 30 percent of English-English or English-English-Korean dictionary users also looked up illustrative sentences, synonyms, and accurate definitions. Fourth, students were deficient regarding their productive knowledge of vocabulary. They also lacked both receptive and productive knowledge of phrasal verbs. Based on these findings, four teaching implications regarding L2 vocabulary learning in connection with dictionary use were discussed in detail.
