영문 초록

This study aims to propose guidelines for developing intensive in-service English teacher training program(IIETTP). Recent developments in second language teacher education are reviewed and some implications are drawn for designing language teacher training courses. A questionnaire survey was administered to investigate trainee teachers’ perception, opinions and needs. 574 trainee teachers took part in the survey that covers areas on IIETTP goals, curriculum, training materials and methods, follow-up, and program evaluation. According to the analysis of the responses, it is suggested that trainees’ prior experience, knowledge, attitude and expectation should be taken into account in designing IIETTP. The survey finding proposes that language improvement, methodology, and teaching practice modules should be included in an IIETTP syllabus within a balanced framework appropriate to meet goals effectively in a given context. Some suggestions are also made what support trainee teachers are provided for their continuing professional development when they go back to school. Emphasis is given on a process-oriented program evaluation where trainees take an active role in their learning to teach.
