합스부르크 유산과 오스트리아의 정체성

국문 초록

합스부르크 제국의 전통과 유산은 시대에 따라, 정치적, 이데올로기적 지향에 따라 상이하게 평가된다. 한편에서는 칭송과 감탄, 다른 한편에서는 비판과 터부의 대상이 되면서 늘 여론 분열과 역사 기술의 논란을 야기해왔다. 가톨릭 보수 세력은 합스부르크 제국에 대해 우호적이었으며 오스트리아와 합스부르크 제국 사이의 역사적 연속성을 주장한 반면, 진보세력은 합스부르크 제국에 대해 비판적인 입장을 취해왔다. 범게르만주의(독일 민족주의)와 오스트리아주의 역시 상반된 합스부르크 평가의 준거틀이 되고 있다. 독일 민족주의가 우세했던 정치 상황에서는 합스부르크 제국은 망각의 대상이었던 반면, 오스트리아의 독자성과 고유성이 강조되던 정권에서는 합스부르크 제국은 국가정체성의 토대가 되었다. 이런 의미에서 오스트리아 역사와 합스부르크 제국은 늘 이중적이며 긴장 관계 속에 있었다. 부침을 거듭해온 합스부르크 유산은 오늘날에도 논란의 여지가 전혀 없는 것은 아니지만 더 이상 정치적, 이데올로기적 함의는 가지고 있지 않다. 탈정치화된 합스부르크는 이제 상업적, 대중 문화적 의미를 확장해나가면서 부분적으로나마 오스트리아인들의 정체성 형성에 기여하고 있다.

영문 초록

The historical meaning of the Habsburg Empire measured differently from the period, political and ideological aim. On one side, The Habsburg Empire is an object to acclaim and admire. but on the other side, it is an object to criticize and put a taboo on. And they caused a split of public and controversies of writing history. Catholic conservatives are friendly to the Habsburg Empire and claimed the historical continuity between Austria and the Habsburg Empire. On the other hand, the progressive has critical position about the Habsburg Empire. Pan-Germanism and Austriatism are the conflicting frame of reference for assesment of the Habsburg Empire. When the political situation that Pan-Germanism has superiority, the Habsburg Empire was a subject to forget. But when the government impresses Austria’s identity and characteristic, the Habsburg Empire became a base of national identity. So in this reason, the history of Austria and the Habsburg Empire has been always twofold and fallen in tensioning relationship. The myth of the Habsburg, which repeated rise and fall still open to dispute. But it has no more political, ideological undertone. Now, the Habsburg without politicization expands commercial, popular-cultural meaning and contributes to the creation of the Austrian’s identity.
