한국 학생들의 생활시간 사용에 대한 비교 연구

국문 초록

통계청에서는 1999년도부터 5년 주기로 ‘국민생활조사’를 실시하여 조사 자료를 공개해왔다. 이 연구는 통계청의 2004 생활시간 자료를 바탕으로 한국 학생들의 생활시간을 분석하여 학생들의 일상생활을 심층적이고, 구체적으로 파악하고 그것의 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 시도되었다. 동시에 이 연구에서는 2004년의 조사결과를 1999년의 조사결과와 비교하여 한국 학생들의 생활시간의 변화과정을 추적하여 변화의 특징과 교육적 의미를 탐색하였다. 결과를 요약하면, 우리나라 고등학생은 대학입시준비로 가장 많은 시간을 학습에 사용하였으며 다른 활동에는 상대적으로 적은 시간을 사용하였다. 반면에 대학생들은 가장 적은 시간을 학습에 사용하였고, 대신 교제 및 여가활동과 봉사활동에 고등학생에 비하여 많은 시간을 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 2004년도 조사결과를 1999년도의 결과와 비교해보면, 전체적으로 학습과 일에 사용하는 시간이 감소하였고, 그 대신 개인유지에 사용하는 시간이 증가하였다. 대학생들의 학습시간 감소, 사교육의 초등교육에로의 이동, 극히 적은 봉사활동 시간, 가족봉사(가사노동)에서의 성차별, 교제 및 여가활동이 TV시청이나 컴퓨터 게임 등 특정의 활동에 편중된 점 등이 한국 학생들의 생활시간 사용 현황에서 나타나는 문제점으로 지적되었다.

영문 초록

Interest in time use surveys is expanding greatly in developed and developing countries, because the surveys reflect people’s lifestyle and quality of life in a balanced way, which are neglected in the national account like GDP. Korea National Statistical Office has carried out ‘National Time Use Survey’ every 5 years since 1999, and the data have been released. The main purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth description of Korean students’ daily time use by analyzing the data from the 2004 National Time Use Survey. Comparing the results of the 2004 data to those of 1999, the changes in students’ time use and the educational implication of these changes are also explored. To summarize the results, senior high school students spend the most time on learning to prepare for university entrance, and thus use relatively less time for other activities. Meanwhile, university students tend to use less time for learning and more time for socializing, leisure activities, and volunteer work. Comparing the results of the 2004 survey to those of 1999, Korean students as a whole tend to use less time for learning and work; instead, they use more time for personal care. Reflecting on the results of this study, some issues are raised: reduction of time use for learning especially among university students, the shift in private education from high school to lower school level, very little time use for volunteer activities, gender discrimination in domestic works, over-concentration on such activities as watching TV or playing computer games in the social and leisure area.
