Symbolism of a Cycle in Karel Jaromir Erben's Ballad Christmas Eve

국문 초록

15세기 초부터 발전하기 시작한 체코 민속 발라드의 전통에 의지하여 18세기 말부터 발전하기 시작한 체코의 근대 문학 발라드는 19세기 전반 젤라코프스키의 환상 발라드를 거쳐 카렐 야로미르 에르벤(K. J. Erben)의 낭만주의 발라드 집인 <민담의 꽃다발> (Kytice z povesti narodnich)에서 발전의 전기를 맞게 되는데,에르벤은 여기에서 민담, 신화, 전설과 같은 체코 민족의 설화에 바탕을 두면서도 자기 고유의 독창적인 문학 발라드를 만들어냄으로써 체코 발라드 문학의 전범이자 체코 문학의 고전을 창조하였다. 에트벤의 낭만주의 발라드 이후에도 체코의 발라드 문학은 19세기 후반의 사회 발라드. 20세기의 프롤레타리아 발라드，심리발라드，서정발라드，발라드 형 소설，발라드 형 드라마 등으로 장르를 넓혀가면서 꾸준한 발전을 거듭하였다. 에르벤의 <민담의 꽃다발>은 12편의 발라드와 1편의 도입부 시로 구성되어 있 으며 첫 시와 마지막 발라드가 체코의 민족정신과 민족혼을 일깨우는 내용을 담고있다. 따라서 작가는 바로 뒤에 오는 스메타나가 민족 음악을 통해 그러하였던 것처럼 액자형의 두 시와 그 속에 끼워 놓은 발라드들을 통해 어려운 시기에 처한 체코 민족의 민족정신 함양에 이바지 하겠다는 의지를 분명히 하고 있다. 에르벤의 발라드 집의 주인공들은 대부분 어머니와 딸, 아내와 같은 여자주인공들인데, 이들은 귀신, 악마, 요정, 운명의 여신과 같은 초지연적인 힘과 조우하게 되고 이들과의 대항에서 살아남기도 하지만 대부분 비극적인 종말을 맞는다. 발라드<크리스마스이브> (Christmas Eve)의 여주인공 마리에(Marie) 역시 운영의 힘에 굴복할 수밖에없다. 여기서 우리는 이 발라드의 중심주제인 운명론(fatalism) 과 만난다. 에르벤의 <민담의 꽃다발〉은 저114장을 제외하고 모두 4 행시의 연들로 구성되어 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 발라드 집에서는 제 1 장에서 2 회， 제 5 장에서 2 회에 걸쳐“물레야 돌아라， 나의 물레야 돌아라!” 라로 시작되는 3 행시의 연들이 반복되고 있다. 이처럼 발라드집의 첫 장과 마지막 장을 물레 (spinning wheel)의 회전 노래로 액자를 만들어 구성하고 있는 점에서 우리는 사이클 모티프 (motif of cycle) 가 이 발라드 집의 중심 모티프를 형성하고 있음을 알 수 있다 물론 물레는 회전과 반복이라는 기능의 변에서 뿐만 아니라 둥근 모양에 있어서도 사이클과 사이클 운동 (cyclic movement) 을 상징하고 있다. 에르벤의 발라드 집에는 ‘물레’ 외에도 ‘달’， ‘한밤중’， ‘호수’， ‘눈’， ‘얼굴’， ‘모자’，‘하객들의 원형’， ‘녹색 화환’， ‘이슬’ 등과 같이 외형과 기능에 있어서 원형 흑은 사이클과 원형 운동 혹은 사이클 운동을 상징하는 모티프들로 충만하다， 특히 이 발라드 의 마지막 장에서 봄， 여름， 가을이라는 계절의 사이클이 지나가고 다시 차가운 겨울이 돌아와 여인네들이 불빛 흐릿한 방에서 원형으로 둘러 앉아 길쌈을 하면서 일동은 “물레야 돌아라， 나의 물레야 돌아라! / 이 세상 모든 것은 돌고 또 돌고， / 우리네 인생은 꿈처럼 지나가네!"라로 이어지는 물레 노래를 부르고 있는데， 여기에서 우리는 물레의 사이클에서 계절의 사이클을 거쳐 인생의 사이클로 이어지는 사이클의 상징성 (symbolism of cycle) 을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Karel Jaromir Erben's made a remarkable contribution to the development of the Czech literary ballad. With his A Bouquet of National Tales Erben has created a classic of the Czech romantic ballad as well as a classic of Czech literature. In Erben’s A Bouquet of National Tales. for human being who transgressed the basic moral codes or the higher order, there is no way-out except having been punished. However to the heroin of some ballads are allowed a way out of the catastrophes, when she atones enough for her guilty, whileas to many heroins no way-out is allowed. Her fate was predetermined by the higher order with which she can do nothing by herself. To this type of heroin belongs the heroin of the ballad Christmas Eve as well In the ballad Christmas Eve the spinning wheel tristich appears two times in the part I and two times in the part V, the last part of the ballad. Here we can see that the cycle of the spinning wheel as a symbolic wheel forms the central motif of the ballad. And this symbolism of spinning wheel develops to the symbolism of the cycle of human life through the symbolism of the wheel of the seasons. Of course in the ballad there are full of motifs symbolizing a cycle and a cyclic movement as well as a circle in connection with the cycle and the cyclic movements When the spinning wheel tristich is heard again in the final part of the ballad the Christmas prophecy comes true. One maiden’s spinning wheel still sings but the other maiden’s one is silent forever. Here we meet with the fatalism, the main theme of the ballad. However Erben's fatalism is not so much pessimism as a philosophy of life to accept life and nature as it is. On the other hand at the end of the ballad a baby is conceived when a maiden dies. The ballad has its message that life goes on like the cycle of the spinning wheel and the cycle of seasons. Here is the symbolism of a cycle in Erben’s ballad Christmas Eve
