국문 초록

본 논문은 체스의 법칙과 현실을 혼동하고, 공상의 세계 속에 살다가 자살로서 생을 마감한 <루진 방어>의 주인공 루진의 심리적추이 과정을 분석하였다. 어린 시절부터 특히 수학을 좋아했던 루진이 상상하는 일련의 기하학적인 도상 이미지가 그의 무의식을 대변하고 있다는 것이 분석의 근거로 사용되었다. 이를 토대로 본고에서는 <루진 방어>에 나타난 다양한 기하학적 도상을 조사함으로써 루진의 내면세계에 대한 총체적인 규명과 함께 그의 삶과 죽음의 의미를 고찰하였다.이 작품에서 나보코프가 체스판의 안정된 세계에 갇혀 사는 루진의 모습을 ‘사각형’의 이미지로 표현했다면, ‘삼각형’과 ‘회전하는원’을 통해서는 자신만의 세계에 갇혀 있던 루진의 정신적 위기와혼란을 대변한다. 또한 ‘추락하는 사선’의 이미지는 루진의 죽음에 대한 상징으로 사용된다. 빗면을 따라 위로 올라가던 사선이 수직선과 평행하여 추락하는 정점의 순간을 서술자는 루진의 자살 순간으로 환치시키고, 이 순간에 무한한 해방감을 투여한다. 이러한 분 석을 통하여 <루진 방어>는 게임과 인생을 혼동하여 결국 파멸에 이르는 루진의 삶이 묘사된다는 표면적 의미를 넘어서게 된다. 오히려 루진의 죽음은 체스의 세계에만 함몰되어 살던 루진이 자신의 최종 결정을 유보시키기 위한 또 다른 방어수였다는 해석으로 확장되는 것이다.

영문 초록

The psychological process of the protagonist of Nabokov's first mature novel , Luzhin, who is reduced to a chaotic state of not only regarding the world of chess game as the actual one, but living in the world of fantasy, is analyzed in this study. Since Luzhin especially liked the subject of mathematics from the early days, this paper focuses on the geometric diagrams, which speak for the protagonist's inner world. In this regards this study takes stand on various diagrams, and examines the meaning of the protagonist's life and death. The structure of Nabokov's chess novel seems straightforward - especially considering chess mechanism, which is depicted by various geometric design, is thematically central to the novel and, therefore, its guiding metaphor. A feature of Luzhin, who is confined in the world of chess board, is expressed by the image of a square, but his spiritual crisis and confusion by the image of a triangle and a revolving circle. Furthermore, a dropping oblique line symbolizes Luzhin's death. Luzhin kills himself and feels a sensation of fear with unbounded release at the moment of the apex when an oblique line rising on a slant plane meets with a vertical line of falling in geometrical sense. The story line of is considered as a simple one, in which the protagonist commits suicide through his utter confusion of a chess game as the actual life, but in the depths of the author's world the death is not simply a downfall by the losing game of a chess match, but a kind of defensive strategy which holds Luzhin's final decision in the fateful game.
