This article aims at a diachronic study on the consonant system of the Romanian language, one of the Romance languages, which are developed by a gradual transformation from the spoken Vugar Latin. As we can see from
this research on the evolutuion of the Romanian consonant system, Romanian more or less maintains the basic consonant system of Latin, except for some characteristics derived from Balkan Latin, which had a different evolution from the normal Westernstream. As far as the Characteristics of Classical Latin concerned, it had a rather small number of consonants in comparison with the vowel system. Besides the glottal fricative h/ɦ/, which was originally aspirate in Clasic Latin began to disappear in the intervocalic position (ex.: ne homo > nehemo > nemo) and then lost completely in the initial position in Vulgar Latin(ex.: habeo > abeo). The finals -m, -s, -t of Classical Latin were eliminated in Vulgar Latin(ex.: murum > muro; formosus > formoso; cantat > canta et.). As far as the Romanian consonant system is concerned, the symbol k is a comparative rarity, which is not a regular letter in Romanian as in Latin. It is used only for international terms such as kilogram, kilometru etc. The voiceless velar plosive is represented by c(ex.: casă/kasǝ/). However this phoneme is changed to the alveolar affricate /ʧ/ before the front vowels(ex.: cer/ʧer/). The voiceless velar plosive is represented by the diagraph ch before the front vowels(ex.: ochi/oki/). The voiced velar plosive g/ɡ/ shows
similar distributions as the voiceless. Among the consonant symbols, ş/ʃ/ and ţ/ʦ/ exist only in Romanian, which are in general derived from the Latin s and t before the front vowels(ex.: Lat. sīc > Rom. şi; Lat. tĕnere > Rom. ţine etc.). As already stated above, the glottal fricative h/ɦ/ of Classical Latin was lost completely in the initial position in Vulgar Latin. Therefore, the symbol h either disappeared in the Romance languages or is used alphabetically for the loan words but has no more sound, that is mute. Among the Romance languages, Romanian is only the language which uses the glottal fricative as phoneme. We can consider that the aspirate of Classical Latin was also lost in Romanian and then reintroduced by the influence of the neighboring languages, especially the Slavonic languages. Notice that this symbol appears generally in Slavonic based words(ex.: duh, hrană etc.). In addition, the Latin consonant cluster -ct/kt/- in the intervocalic position was changed into -pt- in Romanian, that is, the velar plosive /k/ became bilabial /p/(ex.: Lat. coxa/koksa/ > Rom. coapsă/koapsǝ/). Another example for the labialisation is the changing of Latin făctŭm to Romanian fapt. Thus in Romanian is popular the labialisation which is regarded as the influence of the substratum. In conclusion, the Romanian consonant system maintains the basic phonological evolution from Latin to the Romance laguages, except for some characteristics due to the geographical circumstance of Balkan Romance.
