국문 초록

시인이자소설가, 수필가, 번역가인체스와프미워쉬(Czesław Miłosz)는 1980년노벨문학상을수상한전후 (戰後) 폴란드문학을대표하는작가이다. 그가1953년에발표한<사로잡힌영혼>은전후스탈린시대의폴란드를 배경으로 현대인을 억압하는 정치 이데올로기의 본질과 문제점을 날카롭게 파헤친 ‘사회비평서’이자 ‘역사철학서’라고 할 수 있다. 이 작품에서 미워쉬는 실존인물을 모델로 한 예술가의 네 가지 유형을 제시함으로써 절대권력 앞에서 자신들의 영혼을 지켜내지 못하고 자기파멸에 이르거나, 현실 순응, 적극적인 동조 또는 극적인 변절과 무기력한 방관으로 대응하는 당대 지식인들의 의식구조를 적나라하게 분석하고 있다. 본논문에서는<사로잡힌영혼>에 등장하는 네 명의 예술가―도덕주의자알파, 세상을사랑했다가그로부터버림받은불행한연인베타, 역사의노예로전락한감마, 그리고음유시인델타가전체주의체제하에서직면했던 갈등구조를 ‘나와 자신과의 갈등’, ‘나와 세계와의 갈등’, ‘나와 자연과의 갈등’으로 도식화하여 살펴보고, 순응, 파멸, 변절, 동조라는 개별적인 대처방식을 통해 사회가 요구하는 바람직한 지식인상(象)은 무엇인지 고찰해보았다. 아울러 권력의 비판자가 아니라 수혜자로 전락한 예술가의 초상을 통해 폭력과 압제의 역사 이면에 도사리고있는 지적(知的) 폭력의 문제점과 예술의 근원적 역할, 그리고 현실 참여문제에 대해서도 분석해 보았다.

영문 초록

is the most famous work by Czesław Milosz, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980. It has been in print for nearly half a century. His book is simultaneously a memoir and a work of history, biography, political philosophy and literary criticism. The elements come together particularly well in the chapters about the lives of persons identified only as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. “It was only toward the middle of the twentieth century that the inhabitants of many European countries came, in general unpleasantly, to the realization that their fate could be influenced directly by intricate and abtruse books of philosophy”. Thats how this book begins, and it captures Miłosz’s major theme: the vast difference between “abtruse books of philosophy” and real human beings. In a series of connected essays, he studies that difference, and the ways in which people respond when they are forced to deny it. Most of the essays tell the stories of writers that Miłosz knew in Warsaw before the war, and the different routes they took to becoming instruments of communist propaganda. Of the other essays, the one most powerful to an American reader is “Looking to the West”, which starts with Miłosz being asked whether Americans are really stupid. The writing is beautiful and vivid. I highly recommend this book to anybody who dislikes the oversimplifications of ideology. offers invaluable assistance to those who have been involved with a destructive cult, whether it be religious, political or psycho- therapeutic.
