어원론 연구에 관한 소고

국문 초록

성)라는 두 단어가 합쳐진 것으로 어원론의 원의는 ‘참된 어의를 연구하는 학문’이라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 플 라톤은 일찍이 사물의 명칭과 그 의미의 개연성에 관하여 의문을 제기한 바 있으며, 그 후 어원연구에 관한 관 심은 크리시포스(Chrysippos) 등과 같은 고대 그리스의 후기 스토아학파를 거쳐 고대 로마제국의 학자들에 의 해 계승되어졌다. 고대 로마제국의 라틴어 문법학자였던 바로(Varro)는 어원론을 ‘단어들이 왜 그리고 어디서 온 것인지’를 연구하는 것으로 간주하였다. 이와 같이 서양에서는 이미 고대 그리스 및 로마시대에 낱말의 기원 에 관한 관심을 갖고 있었다. 그러나 그 당시 학자들은 어원 분석이나 의미 변화에 있어서 그것을 정확히 규명 하지는 못했다. 중세의 어원론은 고대 그리스, 로마시대의 이론을 거의 그대로 계승했다고 보아도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 19세기에 접어들면서 어원연구는 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 된다. 19세기 역사-비교언어학의 연구방법이 확 립되면서 어원연구도 규칙적인 음운변화에 관심을 집중시키게 된다. 19세기 말 의미론이 과학적 학문으로 발전 하기 시작하면서 어원론에도 낱말의 의미를 다시 중요시하게 된다. 이러한 변화는 언어지리학 연구에 의해서 크게 확산되었다. 또한 당시의 실증주의적인 학문연구 방법에 입각하여 문헌상의 충분한 증거자료를 제시하는 방법론적인 영향을 받아 어원연구에도 새로운 변화가 일어났다. 즉, 전통적 음운 변화 법칙에 입각해서 그 기원 을 찾고자하는 기원 어원론〉에서 의미 변화에 의해서 낱말의 변화 과정을 강조하는 〈낱말의 역사 어원론〉 으로 바뀐 것이다. 20세기 초에는 한 때 어원연구에 있어서 음성적인 면과 의미적인 면이 대립하였으나 1 차 세계 대전 이후 그러한 대립에 관한 무모한 논쟁이 사라졌으며 〈언어 내적〉 사실과 〈언어 외적〉 사실을 고려하여 음운론적, 의미론적 자료뿐만 아니라 형태 통사론적인 면도 엄밀히 검토해야한다는 주장이 힘을 얻게 되었다.

영문 초록

This article is a study on the Etymology of the Indo-European Languages, with reference to Romance Languages. We can see the first relatively detailed discussion of the etymological problems in the Dialog of Platon in which he showed an interest in the origin of the names of human beings, of animals or of things. At that time Etymology was the science of researching . This kind of tradition for the etymological study was succeeded by the Roman Grammarian Varro through the Grecian Scholars of late Stoa School, above all Chrysipos. In the Medieval epoch the ancient etymological concept was not basically changed . It is not going too far to say that the modern Etymology began with the appearance of the Historical Comparative Linguistics. From about 1900 onward Romance Linguistics became the field in which new methods were adopted under the dominant influence of Indo-European studies. For the etymologists of this generation Etymology means no more than the earliest form and meaning of a word, regardless of whether any statements is made about the original meaning of the word. Henceforth, it was governed by new principles. Firstly, the importance of word-blends is recognized with increased awareness. Secondly, Onomatopoeia is reinstated as a reputable source of linguistic creations. Thirdly, the appearance of linguistic geography, which is treated as a universal method for finding out the real truth of word-history, was influential in the research. The notion of Etymology becomes ambiguous: the old type, phonological, so-called <étymologieorigine> contrasts with the modern, semantic, <étymologie-histoire du mot>. In the light of these developments it is clear that today Etymology in the Indo-European Languages embraces two essentially different questions. One is the original form as well as the original meaning of the Indo-European Prototype. The other is its subsequent history down to a point indicated by the documentation of the cognate language concerned. Etymology in the modern sense is biography of the word; its origin would be nothing but a point of departure for further research. Therefore for ideal etymological research we need further examination not only of phonological, semantical but also of morphological and syntactical form in consideration of both sides, namely internal and external facts of language.
