국문 초록

  본 논문은 30, 40대 고학력 중산층 여성들의 사교육을 통한 모성수행을 강제하는 문화적 지형을 그리며, 과잉된 한국적 모성 수행 주체인 여성들에 대해 평생교육이 어떠한 개입을 모색해야 할지 질문한다. 모성 수행의 가장 큰 부분을 자녀(사)교육으로 규정하는 담론들은 여성들의 자녀교육에 대한 몰입과 헌신이 자발적인 ‘극성’으로 보이게 만든다. 그러나 그 이면에는 여성들을 교육 담당자로 호명하고 상벌로 훈육하는 가족 내·외부의 가부장성이 존재한다. 본 연구의 참여자들처럼 고등교육을 경험한 어머니들은 자녀교육에 대한 책임과 의무를 이행하지만, 그것이 갖고있는 모순과 한계를 알고 있으며, 그럼으로써 책임과 의무에 몰입하기보다는 ‘수행’하면서 ‘자신만의 길’ 찾기를 유예하지 않기도 한다. 이들은 한국 사회에서 여성들이 남성과 유사한 종류의 ‘시민권’을 획득하는 것이 현재로선 매우 어렵다는 것을 알고 있다. 따라서 현재 모성 수행의 시간은 여성들에게 가부장사회에서의 시민성을 보장해주며, 후일 새로운 일을 도모할 수 있게 해주는 준비의 기간일 수 있다. 이 지점에서 본 연구는 평생교육의 개입을 모색하려 한다.

영문 초록

  This article is intended to map out the cultural influences of patriarchism that have been reinforcing the "conventional" motherhood to women in their 30s and 40s with K-12 children and asks how lifelong education will be involved with these women who are "acting out" the reinforced motherhood as an "education manager." The present discourses in which middle-aged women are defined as "education manager" contribute to making these women look hyper-active and autonomous in managing their children"s educational matters. However, behind this scene there exists patriarchism inside and outside families that disciplines mothers into the position of a manager for their children"s education by giving them both punishments and rewards. Although women like the interviewees for the present research who are highly educated and are in the middle class fulfill responsibility and obligation for educating children, they see-though its drawbacks and strengths, so that they just "act out" good motherings and never delay their exploring endeavors toward the "ways of my own." These women have known that Korean women are not equal to men when it comes to the matter of acquiring "citizenship." In this sense, during the time when women act out the "pre/pro-scribed" motherrhood they could take an advantage of this period as an opportunity for them to prepare themselves for designing their future as a "full citizen." Researchers of the present study find this point for lifelong education to be involved with. This is because without understanding of the acted-out motherhood of women in their 30s and 40s, it would be impossible to perceive them as lifelong learners as they have been in the field of lifelong education.
