영문 초록

  Alf Lailah wa Lailah is the book of folk tales of Middle Eastern countries and it implies huge volume of various kinds of stories. As for the classification of the stories of the book, there are many different opinions of scholars. This study classifies the book as Animal tales, Ordinary tales, Miracle tales, Instructive tales, Jokes tales and Anecdotes. And this study analyzes the contents of Miracle tales which may be named as fairy tales or wonder tales.
  This study analyzes the Miracle tales as three points. The first point is the survey of the kinds and roles of supernatural beings like Jinn, Ifr t, M rid, Gh l, Ibl s. And it finds that these supernatural beings play various roles but similar roles at the same time in the stories. They are divided into the good ones and the evil ones, muslim and non muslim and they may help human beings or do harm to them. They show supernatural powers when they perform miracles, but except those cases they talk and conduct like ordinary human beings, so they often become the heroes of the stories. And they are considered as some parts of ordinary human life rather than the fantastic and mysterious beings.
  The second point is the survey of various aspects of magic and its functions. As for the motifs of magic, the transformation between human beings and animals takes large part of it. And the processes of transformation are usually monotonous and fixed. And the most general means of the magic are magic words, and the instruments of the magic contains water, soil, sand, talisman, aromatic essence, drum, gold sticks or brass sticks, whistles.
  The third point is the survey of hero"s adventure to surreal worlds. The heroes travel to the surreal world in order to find his family or unknown lover or in order to visit his friend. Usually the heroes meet the happy ending after his adventure. As for the kinds of surreal worlds, most of them are worlds of supernatural beings, and the sea worlds follow them. The worlds of supernatural beings are usually very far but the heroes can reach it very fast due to riding on Ifrit, horses, camels.
  In the Miracle tales of Alf Lailah wa Lailah the activities of supernatural beings and the roles of magic and the trips to surreal worlds are regarded as some parts of ordinary human life. But these tales never lose mysterious and fantastic fascinations.
