This study analyzes the components of Hangeul code & Hangeul syllables for the preparation of unification of the South Korea and the North Korea. Hangeul code consists of input code, processing code and output code. The concept & design process for the Roman alphabet fonts used in English or German have been commonly employed in the design of Hangeul fonts, one of Hangeul output codes. It is a wrong approach. Though both Hangeul and the Roman alphabets are phonetic writings, the difference between them consists in the fact that Hangeul is based on both phonemes and syllables.
Study on Hangeul typography requires deep understanding of the shape & principle of Hangeul syllables, phoneme classification and the algorithm for font combination. All of the 11,172 syllables in Hangeul can be expressed independently or with the combination of 302, 903 or 1858 phonemes.
Understanding of ① Frequency curve ② Leeks curve and ③ Accumulation curve is required for the design of Hangeul fonts. Knowledge on & practice of the three steps consisting of base drawing, typeface design and digital font design are indispensible for the production of Hangeul font for fontography.
In the design of Hangeul code and Hangeul font for the preparing of unification of the South Korea and North Korea, it should be remembered that "Hangeul" is alphabet writing based on phonemes and that syllables each of which contains an initial sound, a medial vowel (& final consonant) are constituted first to structure a word. These facts should be thoroughly understood for the design of Hangeul code and fonts which fully reflect the nature of combination in Hangeul and express 11,172 syllables in Hangeul.
