미국 대학에 있어서 교육비 지출이 학업지속률 및 졸업률에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 대학의 교육비 지출이 대표적인 대학효과성 지표로 여겨지는 학업지속률 및 졸업률에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 미국 교육부의 IPEDS와 US News & World Report에서 제공하는 자료를 이용하여, 미국의 102개 연구중심대학을 대상으로 대학의 학업지속률 및 졸업률과 학생당 교수학습비, 학생당 교수학습보조비, 일인당 학생활동비, 교수일인당 연구비, 학생당 장학금액, 학생당 대학활동비, 학생당 대외봉사비 등과의 관계를 회귀분석을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 학생당 교수학습비가 학업지속률 및 졸업률에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으며, 학생당 대외봉사비는 오히려 부정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 학생당 교수학습지원비와 교수일인당 연구비 및 다른 교육비 지출은 의미 있는 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 대학의 학업지속률과 졸업률을 높이기 위해서는 교육비 지출에 있어서 우선적으로 학생당 교수학습비에 대한 투자를 늘릴 것을 시사하며, 대외봉사비 지출에 대해서는 적정 지출 규모를 산정하는 것이 필요함을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of educational expenditures on retention and graduation rates. Using data from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and US News & World Report, and targeting 102 Doctoral/Research Universities - Extensive in USA, this study analyzed the relationship between 1-year retention and 6-year graduation rates and educational expenditures including instructional expenditure, academic support expenditure, student service expenditure, research expense, scholarships and fellowships expenditure, institutional support expenditure, and public service expenditure. The results of this study revealed that instructional expenditure was positively effect on retention and graduation rates while public service expenditure was negatively effect on those rates. Other expenditures did not significantly related with retention and graduation rates. The results suggest that instructional expenditure should be a top priority in distributing institutional expenditures if university wants to increase retention and graduation rates. In addition, university administrator should consider the proper level of public service expenditure since it negatively related to institutional retention and graduation rates.
