개화기 출판 활동의 한 징험 - 회동서관의 출판문화사적 의의를 중심으로

국문 초록

회동서관은 한국 사회의 개화기에 문을 연 선구적인 출판 및 서점 겸영(兼營) 업체였다. 이에 관해서는 다음과 같은 여덟 가지로 회동서관의 출판 문화사적 의의를 평가할 수 있다. 첫째는 회동서관의 사회적 위상에 관한 재평가이다. 이 기업의 상호가 말해 주듯, 회동서관(匯東書館)이라는 뜻은 곧 ‘우리나라의 책사(冊舍)’라는 의미이다. 이는 어두운 시절에 내보였던 문화적 자존심을 구현한 사업적 의지였다. 둘째, 회동서관은 여러 면에서 신기원을 이룬 출판 기업이었다. 예컨대,『자전석요』를 내어 최초의 베스트셀러를 기록했고, 최초의 일간지 연재 소설인『무정』을 단행본으로 발행하는 등 많은 신기록을 수립한 바 있다. 셋째, 회동서관은 한국의 근대 출판 기업 중에서 최초로 그룹 체제를 실현했다는 점에서 특기점을 더한다. 이는 침략 세력에 대응한 민족 출판 기업을 육성해야 마땅하다는 정당한 명분의 실현이었던 것이다. 넷째, 회동서관의 다중적 경영은 매우 중요한 선행 사례를 남겼다. 서점인 동시에 세책 업소였고 각종 신서적을 내는 출판사였기 때문이다. 나아가 중국과의 출판 제작 및 서적 수입 사업을 교류한 다목적 출판 기업이기도 했다. 다섯째, 회동서관은 고대 소설을 제외한 모든 출판물에 대하여 인세를 지불한 선행 사례를 남겼다. 이는 한국의 근대 출판사(出版史)에 있어 중요한 선례인 것이다. 여섯째, 신문관(新文館)의 육전소설과는 대조적으로 십전소설을 꾸준히 발행하여 광범한 보급 실적을 거두었는데, 이 또한 주목되는 출판ㆍ영업 성과로 기록된다. 일곱째, 회동서관의 출판 관행이 비교적 대량 부수였다는 사실에 주목할 할 필요가 있다. 특히, 독립심을 겨냥한 출판 기획이 독자들의 정서와 부합되면서 큰 반응을 불러일으킨 사례가 있는데, 이는 오히려 이 회사를 어려움에 처하게 된 동인(일제의 탄압)으로 작용했다. 여덟째, 회동서관은 경제ㆍ산업ㆍ기술류와 의ㆍ약학 분야 등의 첨예한 신간 개발에 적극적이었다. 동양 고전에도 성과를 거두었지만, 신서적 출판에 보다 많은 노력을 기울인 출판사로 존재했다. 이 연구는 이상의 내용을 여러 관련 자료를 통해 실증했으며, 특히 회동서관이 존재(1897~1950년대 중반)하는 동안 모두 201종의 출판 업적이 이룩되었음을 밝혀냈다.

영문 초록

Hoedongs？kwan was a firm which was opened in the era of enlightenment of Korean society, and operated publishing in addition to a bookstore. In relation to that, the significance for the history of publishing culture of Hoedongs？kwan can be evaluated through eight matters as followings; First, it is a reevaluation on the social phase of Hoedongs？kwan. The significance of Hoedongs？kwan, like the firm name, means the very ‘Korean book house’. It was a business intention which embodied the cultural self-respect showed in a dark age. Second, Hoedongs？kwan was a publishing firm made an epoch in the various aspects; For example, it published Chaj？nsukyo and recorded a bestseller for the first time, and brought out Moojung in book form which was the first novel in installments in a daily press. Like them, Hoedongs？kwan established many new records. Third, it is worth special mention that Hoedongs？kwan realized a group system for the first time among the modern publishing firms of Korea. It was realization of right justice which ought to foster a national publishing firm against an aggressive power. Fourth, multi-management of Hoedongs？kwan left very important precedents because Hoedongs？kwan ran a leasing service of book as well as a bookstore, and was a publishing company issuing all sorts of new books. In additions, it was also a publishing firm of multipurpose to promote an exchange of not only publishing production but also book imports from China. Fifth, Hoedongs？kwan left a precedent paid a royalty on all publications except a story of ancient times. It was an important precedent in the history of modern publishing of Korea. Sixth, Hoedongs？kwan steadily published and distributed one-dime-romance in contrast to six-pence-romance from Sinmoonkwan, and gave actual results of a wide range of distribution; That was also recorded as a noticeable performance of publishing and marketing. Seventh, it is necessary to take note of the fact that customary practice of publishing of Hoedongs？kwan was to issue comparatively a large circulation. Especially, there was a case evoking a large response when a publishing planning for an independent spirit fit in with readers’ emotion; That caused the firm to undergo hardships(suppression from Japan). Eighth, Hoedongs？kwan was positive in developing the sharply new publications like the fields of medical science or pharmacy as well as those of economy, industry and technology; It existed as a publishing firm which exerted a great effort to publish new books rather than Eastern classical literatures. This paper proved the matters above through all sorts of the related data; Especially, it turned out that Hoedongs？kwan produced publishing achievements of a total of 201 classes during its existence(1897~the middle of the 1950s).
