국문 초록

빠르게 고령화되어가는 상황에 직면한 한국 사회는 최근 들어 노인교육에 많은 관심을 기울이고 있다. 그러나 아직 노인을 위해, 사회를 위해 한국의 노인교육은 어떠한 노인교육이어야 할까에 대해서는 많은 연구가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구자는 이 연구에서 과연 앞으로 요구되는 한국 노인교육은 어떠한 노인교육이어야 할까에 대해 나름대로 답을 찾고자 하였다. 그리고 이에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 한국과는 다른 노인교육을 성공적으로 전개해온 U3A를 집중적으로 살펴보려고 하였다. U3A는 the University of the Third Age의 약자로, 여기서의 Third Age란 과거와는 다른 긍정적인 이미지를 지닌 노인을 의미하며 U3A는 이런 노인들을 위한 교육이다. U3A는 한국의 노인교육과 비슷한 시기에 시작하였으나 여러 면에서 한국 노인교육과 차이가 난다. 그리고 이런 차이점들은 왜 U3A는 국제적으로 인정된, 성공적인 노인교육이 되었는데 반해 한국의 노인교육은 그렇지 못했는가를 설명해주고 있다. 이 연구에서 본 연구자는 현재 한국 노인교육은 구체적으로 U3A와 어떻게 다르며, U3A로부터 무엇을 배울 수 있을지, 앞으로의 한국 노인교육은 U3A와 어떤 관계를 갖는 것이 바람직한지, 그리고 만약 U3A를 부분적으로나마 받아들일 경우 U3A의 두 모델- 프랑스식 모델과 영국식 모델 중 어느 모델을 받아들이는 것이 더 바람직한지 살펴보려고 하였다.

영문 초록

Korea is aging at great speed. Accordingly, it becomes overwhelmed with the problems resulting from the fast growing number of the elderly. Recently, people begin to view education for the elderly as a solution to the problems. Of course many types of elderly education have existed in Korea. But people want something new and different because most of them are welfare or human resource development oriented. Nevertheless, there are not many studies done to find out what kind of elderly education is needed for the elderly and the society and how it will be different from the already existing elderly education. In this study, the author will try to answer that question. For that purpose, the author turns to the University of the Third Age(U3A) because U3A has been internationally recognized as one of the most successful elderly education. U3A started from France in 1975 and is now spreading across the world. Although Korean elderly education and U3A started almost at the same time and target the elderly, they have many differences. In this study, the author tries to find out what differences Korean elderly education has from U3A and what Korean elderly education learns from U3A. Also, the author tries to show what the near future direction for Korean elderly education will be like and in the direction, how much Korean elderly education will take from U3A and in specific, which U3A model-French model or British model Korean elderly education will adopt.
