‘체(체)’해석의 근거 읽기

국문 초록

본 연구는 중국 고대 제사 의식인 “체(체)”에 대한 해석과 근거들을 살펴보고 그 예학적 주제들을 고찰한 것이다. 주희와 진호와 같은 송, 원대의 학자들은 체를 종묘제로서 해석한다. 그 해석의 근거인 왕숙(王肅) 설의 논거들은 고증적으로 견고하지 않지만, 체를 자기 시조의 묘 안에서 조상의 혈연적 계보에 대한 추숭(追崇) 의식을 통해 천자가 대종으로서의 자신의 종법적 위상을 구현하고자하는 예학적 주제의식을 읽을 수 있다. 정현은 체를 천제(天祭)로 해석한다. 그의 해석의 근거인 『주례』 및 『춘추공양전』과 참위의 여러 설들에 대한 비판이 제기되고 있지만, 종법적 질서와 가치를 중시하면서도 제국의 국가 의례인 천자(天子)의 제사에 혈연적인 종법 질서 이상의 초월적 질서와 도덕적 가치를 부여하고자 했던 그의 예학적 주제를 읽을 수 있다. 체 해석에 담긴 이와 같은 예학적 주제의식들을 그들이 처한 시대적 현실의 다양한 조건 속에서 확인하고 보다 정교하게 밝혀주는 것이 체 해석에 있어서의 과제일 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper surveys interpretations of “Di(제)”, a ceremony of sacrifices of ancient China, with their bases, and studies the themes of Li(禮) reflected therein. In Jing Shu(經書) on Li(禮), “Di(체)” is recorded as the ceremony of sacrifices that the King(天子) dedicated to the first king of the dynasty and his ancestors; as the ceremony of sacrifices to deceased kings of many generations; and as the ceremony of the ancestral temple(宗廟祭) that the King and Dukes performed every season. Wang Su(王肅) in Wei(魏) and most scholars later in the Dynasties of Song(宋), Ming(明), and Yuan(元) interpreted the King's Di(체) as the ceremony of the ancestral temple to the first king and his ancestors. This implies that Di(체) was positively assimilated into the kinship system of the law of Zong(宗法). On the other hand, Zheng Xuan(鄭玄) in the Han(漢) Dynasty interpreted Di(체) as the ceremony of sacrifices to God(天帝), thus discriminating Di(체) from Xia(?) and the Di (체) as the ceremony of the ancestral temple. It appears that he attempted to establish Di(체) firmly as an imperial ceremony performed by the King, by bestowing on Di(체) non-kinship moral values and the transcendental order, which is far beyond the kinship order of the law of Zong.
