Hermann Hesse’s Demian explores themes of self-discovery, duality, and spiritual transformation, with particular emphasis on the profound influence of Frau Eva, Demian’s mother, on Emil Sinclair’s psychological and emotional development. This paper examines the unique role that Frau Eva plays as a maternal figure, a mentor, and a symbol of enlightenment, analyzing her impact on Sinclair’s path toward individuation. Through textual analysis and scholarly perspectives, this study highlights how Hesse presents maternal guidance to the formation of the self.

영문 초록

헤르만 헤세의 데미안은 자기 발견, 이중성, 영적 변화를 중심으로 다루며, 특히 에밀 싱클레어의 심리적, 감정적 발전에 있어 데미안의 어머니 프라우 에바가 끼친 영향을 강조한다. 본 논문은 프라우 에바의 역할, 즉 모성적 인물, 멘토, 깨달음의 상징 등을 분석하고, 그녀가 싱클레어의 개체화 형성에 미친 영향을 탐구한다. 본 연구는 한 인물의 자아 형성에 있어 모성적 안내가 어떠한 역할을 하는지를 텍스트 분석과 학문적 관점을 통해 조명한다.
