국문 초록

오늘날 농촌 사찰은 고령화, 신도 감소, 사회적 영향력 감소 등 심각한 도전을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 탈종교화 시대를 맞아 농촌 사찰의 역할 재정립의 가능성을 탐구하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 농촌지역에 위치한 S 사찰의 신도를 대상으로 2024년 4월부터 7월까지 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 92부의 유효 응답을 바탕으로 기술통계 분석을 수행하였다. 이를 통해 농촌 사찰의 현대화와 디지털화에 대한 신도들의 태도, 사찰의 사회적 역할, 신행활동 등에 대한 인식을 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 농촌 사찰의 현대화와 디지털화는 신도들과의 소통을 강화하고, 젊은 세대를 포함한 새로운 신도층을 확보할 수 있는 중요한 전략으로 이해된다. SNS 및 디지털 플랫폼 활용에 대한 신도들의 긍정적인 태도가 확인되었으며, 사찰의 의례와 의식을 현대적 요구에 맞게 조정하는 방안이 중요하게 제안되었다. 반면, AI 로봇 스님의 활용에 대해서는 전통적, 종교적 가치와 인간적 요소를 훼손할 수 있다는 우려가 제기되었다. 이 결과는 디지털 기술이 보조적 도구로 기능해야 함을 시사하며, 전통과 현대의 균형을 유지하는 것이 중요함을 보여준다. 또한, 농촌 사찰은 지역사회와 유기적 연계를 통해 공공의 이익에 기여할 필요성이 강조되었다. 신도들은 사찰이 정서적 지원, 환경 보호, 복지 활동 등에서 적극적으로 참여하길 기대하며, 스님들의 사회적 역할 확대를 요구하고 있었다. 사찰은 단순한 종교적 역할을 넘어 지역민들에게 심리적 위안과 치유를 제공하고, 공동체적 연대를 강화하는 역할을 수행해야 한다는 점이 확인되었다. 본 연구는 농촌 사찰이 탈종교화 시대의 도전을 극복하고, 전통적 수행과 현대적 역할을 통합하여 지역사회와 공존하는 실천적 모델로 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Rural temples today face significant challenges such as aging populations, declining membership, and reduced social influence. This study aims to explore the potential for redefining the role of rural temples in the age of secularization. To this end, a survey was conducted with lay members of S Temple, located in a rural area, from April to July 2024, and a total of 92 valid responses were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The study examined perceptions regarding the modernization and digitization of rural temples, their social roles, religious practices. The findings suggest that modernization and digitization are crucial strategies for enhancing communication with lay members and attracting new followers, including younger generations. In particular, positive attitudes toward the use of SNS and digital platforms were identified, highlighting the importance of adapting temple rituals and practices to contemporary needs. However, the use of AI-based robotic monks raised concerns about the potential erosion of traditional religious values and human elements. These results underscore the importance of maintaining a balance between tradition and modernity, ensuring that digital technology serves as a supplementary tool. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the need for rural temples to engage more actively with local communities, contributing to public welfare. Respondents expressed expectations for temples to play a more prominent role in providing emotional support, environmental protection, and welfare services. There was also a strong demand for the expansion of monks' social roles. Beyond being mere spaces for religious practice, temples should offer psychological comfort, healing, and foster community solidarity. This study highlights the potential for rural temples to overcome the challenges of secularization by integrating traditional practices with modern roles, thereby establishing a practical model for coexistence with local communities. It also suggests that through digital technology and social engagement, rural temples can play a pivotal role in reshaping the future of contemporary Buddhism.
