방명록을 활용한 박물관 이용자의 사회적 기억 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 박물관 이용자 연구로 그들이 역사박물관, 기념관, 자료관 등에서 과거를 어떻게 기억하는지 분석하는 자료로 방명록에 주목한다. 방명록 작성은 연구자를 의식할 수 밖에 없는 다른 질적 연구 방법에 비해 상대적으로 독립적으로 이루어지기 때문에, 이용자의 진솔한 생각을 알 수 있는 한 방법이다. 하지만 방명록 문구는 대체로 길이가 한정되어있기 때문에 유의미한 정보를 추출하기 힘들다. 그렇기에 방명록을 분석하기 위해 크게 두 가지 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, 방명록 작성의 물적 조건을 다각적으로 분석하여 기록이 어떤 함의와 전제를 갖는지 살피는 것이다. 방명록이 위치하는 공간에 따라 이용자가 기억하고 작성하는 바는 달라진다. 둘째, 담론 분석에 있어 화용론적 접근을 활용하여 텍스트를 분석하는 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 이 방법은 이용자의 발화, 즉 방명록 문구를 어떻게 조직하는 방식에 대해 알아보는 것이다. 대표적으로 글에서 상상된 독자를 정하는 ‘수신자 정향성 설정하기’와 특정 문구와 시간을 다시 활용하는 ‘재-인용하기’와 ‘재-시간화하기’를 들 수 있다. 과거 박물관에서 이용자와 소통할 수 있는 창구였던 방명록은 다른 모습으로 진화하고 있지만 위 방법론에 따른 분석은 여전히 유효하다. SNS나 박물관 내 참여 공간에서 남는 결과물 등 제한된 정보만을 활용해 질적으로 분석하고자 할 때, 논의한 방법론이 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This article uses visitor books to investigate how museum visitors remember pasts in history museums, memorials, and documentation centers. Writing visitor books is a relatively independent memory practice compared to other qualitative research methods. Visitors can not help being conscious of the researcher, while they could be more honest when writing entries in visitor books. However, extracting meaningful information from the entries is difficult because they are in limited sentences. To overcome this shortcoming, a two-step methodology can be suggested. First, it is necessary to analyze diverse material conditions to see the implications and premises of the entries. For instance, what users remember and write differs by where the visitor book is located. Second, to analyze the discourses, entries can be seen by the method of pragmatics. Pragmatics investigate the texts as a user's utterance and examine how the words are organized in specific contexts. This study suggests establishing addressivity, which is setting up imaginary expected readers, re-citing and re-timing, which utilizes particular clauses and time again. A visitor book is one of museums' few ways to communicate with visitors. While museum visitor books are disappearing and changing, this methodology is still valid for analyzing specific entries. Contents with limited data, such as that from social media and the museum's participatory programs, can be researched by the methodology discussed in this thesis.
