대학의 중도탈락 조기 예측을 위한 신입생 학업지속성 진단도구 개발 및 타당화 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 대학 중도탈락 가운데 상당한 비중을 차지하는 신입생의 중도탈락을 효과적으로 진단하여 관리할 수 있는 학업지속성 진단도구를 개발하고 타당화하는 것이다. 대학의 지원 개입 가능성이 큰 개인 내적 요인들을 중심으로, 4개의 하위요인을 정의하고(진학만족, 대학기대, 학업기대, 관계기대) 9개 문항을 개발하였다. 수도권 4년제 사립대학 C대학에서 2023년 2월 중순 신입생 오리엔테이션 조사를 통해 917명의 자료가 수집되었고, 이들 중 325명으로부터 1학기 말에 재학생 학업지속성 평가 자료가 수집되었다. 탐색적·확인적 요인분석 결과, 개발된 문항의 요인구조와 적합도는 매우 양호한 수준을 나타냈고, 신뢰도 역시 양호하였다. 또한, 입학 시점의 신입생 학업지속성(9문항)은 학기 말 재학생 학업지속성(20문항)과 높은 정적 상관을 맺고 있었으며, 신입생의 재학 중 휴학계획에 따라 학업지속성에 차이가 유의하여 준거 관련 타당도가 확보되었다. 마지막으로, 대학 차원의 효과적인 중도탈락 예방과 충원율 관리를 위한 본 도구의 활용도와 가치에 대해 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Keeping up with the increasing college dropout rate of first-year students, this study aimed to develop and validate the scale examining the academic sustainability of college freshmen. Focusing on the possibility of institutional intervention to enhance student retention, we defined four factors (i.e., college choice satisfaction, college life expectation, academic expectation, and interaction expectation) and developed nine items. Data were collected from 917 freshmen in a private four-year college in metropolitan area in mid-February 2023, and 325 of them participated academic persistence evaluation at the end of the first semester. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses verified the validity of the constructs and items. Scale reliability was also satisfactory. This questionnaire indicated a good criterion validity in that academic sustainability at the time of admission (9 items) showed strong positive correlation with their academic persistence at the end of the semester (20 items), and acadmic sustainability varied significantly depending on their intention to take time off from college. The utilization and value of this diagnostic tool were discussed in terms of institution’s effective attrition prevention and retention management targeted college freshmen.
