다문화가정 어머니의 초등학생 자녀 학업지도 및 사회성지도에 대한 관심과 실제

국문 초록

본 연구는 다문화가정 어머니의 자녀교육에 대한 관심과 실제 교육 수행 정도를 비교, 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 또한 어머니의 직업유무, 한국어 능력, 최종학력과 같은 어머니의 배경정보에 따른 자녀교육의 수행 정도에서의 차이를 살펴보았다. 연구 대상은 다문화가정 어머니 64명이었으며, 설문을 실시하여 다문화가정 아동의 ‘학업 지도’와 ‘사회성 지도’에 대한 관심도와 실제 수행 정도에 대한 인식 차이를 조사하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 다문화가정 어머니들은 자녀의 학업지도와 사회성지도에서 모든 항목에서 관심도와 실제 수행 정도에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 다문화가정 어머니는 자녀지도에 높은 관심을 가지고 있는 데 반해 실제 수행도는 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 다문화가정 어머니의 직업유무에 따라 자녀 학업지도와 사회성지도의 모든 항목에서 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 다문화가정 어머니의 한국어 능력에 따라 학업지도의 모든 항목에서 유의미한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 사회성지도에서는 ‘친구에게 의사 표현 지도’에서 유의미한 차이가 있었으며, 한국어 능력이 높은 어머니들의 수행도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 다문화가정 어머니의 학력에 따라 자녀 학업지도의 네 개 항목과(‘목별 성취도 인지’, ‘알림장 확인’, ‘학습태도 향상을 위한 별도의 노력’, ‘방과 후 시간 관리’)과 사회성지도의 두개 항목(‘친구에게 의사표현 지도’와 ‘교과 외 학교활동 참여 지도’)에서 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 대체로 최종학력이 낮은 어머니에 비해 최종학력이 높은 어머니들의 수행도가 높게 나타났다. 끝으로 이러한 연구 결과를 중심으로 한 논의와 후속연구에 대한 방향을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigated interests and efforts of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) mothers on academic supports and teaching social skills for their children in elementary schools. Also, we investigated differences in the efforts of the CLD mothers by mothers’ characteristics such as employment status, Korean language level, and educational background. The survey was conducted for 64 CLD mothers. The mothers rated their interests and efforts to improve academic performance and social skills of their children in elementary schools. Results indicated that the CLD mothers had a high level of interests on their children’s education but lacked efforts in practice. To be specific, statistically significant differences between interests and efforts were found in all items of academic supports and teaching social skills. Second, there were no significant differences in efforts of the CLD mothers to improve academic achievement and social skills by their employment status. Third, there were no significant differences in efforts of the mothers to improve academic achievement and social skills by their Korean language level except ‘expressing opinions to peers.’ Fourth, education levels of the CLD mothers were associated with four items of academic supports, (a) knowing academic performance levels by subjects, (b) checking school notices, (c) efforts to foster positive attitudes toward learning, and (d) managing time after school, and two items in teaching social skills, (a) expressing opinions to peers and (b) participation in extracurricular activities. Mothers with higher Korean language level and education level put higher levels of efforts in practice. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.
