국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 골튼(F. Galton)의 정상(normality) 개념과 우생학(eugenics), 그리고 성(性)의 상관관계를 밝혀보는 것이다. 이로써 필자는 지금-여기에서도 부지불식간에 우리의 심상에 자리를 잡고 있는 정상과 병리, 그리고 이와 연관된 우월과 열등의 구분 짓기가 잔혹한 역사의 흔적을 남겼던 과거 우생학의 논리와 별반 다르지 않을 수 있음을 성찰해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 골튼의 정규 분포 활용과 정상의 과학적 개념화 그리고 그 함의를, 3장에서는 정상 신체, 지능(intelligence), 집단, 그리고 우생학의 상관관계를, 4장에서는 이에 대한 사례로서 성(sex)을 살펴보고자 한다. 당시 골튼은 정상이란 것은 표준에 불과하고, 그것은 개선이 필요한 상태라고 판단했다. 20세기 전환기에 우생학자들은 자신들이 원하 는 이상적인 국가를 건설하기 위해서는 그에 합당한 정상 신체를 가진 사람들이 필요했고, 이들이야말로 국가의 시민으로서 자격을 갖춘 존재들이라고 생각했다. 골튼의 우생학은 이런 존재들을 출산하려는 야심찬 프로젝트였으나, 결국 자격을 갖추지 못한, 즉 부적격한 존재들을 배제하고 차별하는 폭력적인 도구로 기능했다. 따라서 우리가 우생학-정상-신체를 연결하여 우리의 다양한 실존적 양태(성-장애-계급-인종 등)를 살펴보는 것은, 누가 과연 정상 신체를 가진 인간인가 그리고 우리가 살아가야할 국가-사회의 본질과 그 모습이 어떠해야하는가를 우리 스스로에게 묻는 과정에 다름 아닐 것이다. 우리도 모르는 사이에 체화되었을 수 있는 정상과 비정상이라는 구분의 바탕에 우생학적 원리와 그에 기초한 사고방식이 도사리고 있을지 모른다. 바로 이 점이 우리가 우생학의 역사를 끊임없이 살펴야만 하는 이유일 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the scientific conceptualization of normality based on the statistical methodology of F. Galton, the founder of eugenics, and eugenics and gender identity. With this, I would like to reflect on how the distinction between normality and pathology, and related superiority and inferiority, which are unknowingly taking place in our images here and now, is no different from the eugenics of the past, which left a trace of cruel history. To this end, in Chapter 2, Galton’s application of the normal distribution and the scientific concept of normality and its implications, in Chapter 3, the correlation between normal body, intelligence, groups, and eugenics, and in Chapter 4, sex discourse as an example of this. At the time, Galton decided that normal was just the norm, and that it needed improvement. At the turn of the 20th century, eugenicists thought that in order to build the ideal country they wanted, they needed people with normal bodies suitable for it, and that these people were qualified as citizens of that country. Eugenics was an ambitious project to give birth to these beings, but in the end, it functioned as a violent tool to exclude and discriminate against unqualified beings. Therefore, when we connect eugenics and the normal body and examine our various existential aspects (gender-disability-class-race, etc.) It would be no different from the process of asking ourselves whether we are human beings. The eugenics principle and the way of thinking based on it may lie on the basis of the distinction between normal and abnormal, which may have been embodied without our knowledge. This may be why we must examine the history of eugenics here-and-now.
