늑대의 상징에 대한 연구

국문 초록

상징은 언어로 남김없이 해석할 수 없고, 어떤 미지의 것에 대한 최선의 표현으로 의미를 잉태하고 있다. 상징은 생각할 수 있는 어떤 사실을 나타내는 자의적이거나 의도적인 기호가 아니며, 대부분 의식을 초월한 내용으로 이루어진 상(像)이다. 모래상자에서는 모래의 흐름을 따라서 이미지의 형태가 움직여져 형태화되고 실제화되면서 경험되어지며 상(像)으로 표현된다. 사람들은 늑대를 보면 잔인하고 사악한 동물로 여겨왔으며, 이러한 이미지는 부정적으로 인식되어 왔다. 이로 인해 늑대가 내포한 다양한 상징성을 이해 하기에 어려움이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 늑대에 대한 생태적인 특성과 신화, 민담, 역사, 문화를 통해 늑대의 상징성을 5가지 측면에서 확충한 후 모래상자 안에서 늑대의 상징성이 내담자들의 정신세계 안에서 어떻게 펼쳐지는지를 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째는 신성성, 둘째는 힘과 용맹함, 셋째는 모성성과 보호자, 넷째는 탐욕과 어리석음, 마지막으로 악과 해로움으로 확충할 수 있었다. 모래놀이치료 상자에서 초등학교 3학년 여아는 요리를 해서 같이 나눠 먹는 것으로 모성성을 상징하였다. 초등 4학년 남아는 고릴라의 엉덩이를 늑대가 공격하는 것으로 해로움을 상징하고 있다. 40대 여성의 사례에서는 늑대를 직면하기 힘든 두려움의 대상으로 강한 힘을 상징으로 나타내었다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 단순하게 상징을 이미지화하기보다 다양하게 확충할 필요가 있음과 더불어 늑대에 대한 전반적인 이해를 높이는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

A symbol cannot be fully interpreted by language and conceives meanings as a best representation of something unknown. A symbol is not an arbitrary or intentional sign that represents any cogitable fact; rather, it is mostly made up of images that transcend consciousness. In sand trays, a symbol moves with the flow of the sand, and it is shaped, materialized, experienced, and represented as different images. People have considered wolves as cruel and vicious animals, and these images have been perceived negatively. This negative view towards wolves have impeded understanding their various symbolic meanings. This study examined the symbolism of wolves from five aspects: its ecological characteristics and the myths, folktales, history, and culture associated with this animal. After amplifying the symbolism of wolves, this study also looked at how it is represented in the mental world of clients in their sand trays. The results can be summarized as follows. The symbolism of wolves was amplified to include sanctity, strength and valor, motherhood and protection, greed and stupidity, and evil and harm. In a third grade girl’s sand tray, wolves cooked and ate together, symbolizing motherhood. A fourth grade boy’s sand tray featured a wolf attacking a gorilla’s hip, symbolizing harm. In the case of a woman in her 40s, wolves symbolized strength as an object of fear that is difficult to face. This study is significant in that it highlights the need to diversify and amplify symbols rather than simply image them, as well as improving the overall understanding of the symbolism of wolves.
