『잡기고담』의 논평을 통해 본 임매의 비평의식

국문 초록

『잡기고담』은 이야기마다 논평이 함께 쓰여 있는 몇 안 되는 야담집이라는 점에서 특징적이다. 본고는 『잡기고담』 논평의 의미지향, 형식, 서술방식을 아울러 살핌으로써 미처 검토되지 못한 『잡기고담』 논평의 특징적 면모를 규명하고자 하였다. 이에 대한 예비적 고찰로써 『잡기고담』이 임매가 56세~69세에 해당하는 시기에 쓰였음을 밝히고, 임매가 만년에 『잡기고담』을 저술하며 기본적으로는 산문 쓰기에서 자신이 주요하게 활용해온 글쓰기 방식을 활용하면서, 야담을 논평의 대상으로 삼고 『천예록』의 후평 형식을 차용하되, 보다 본격적이고 진지한 비평의식을 드러내었음을 살펴보았다. 이에 임매가 자신이 주요하게 활용해온 산문 쓰기 방식과 조부 임방의 『천예록』을 통해 익히 접했던 야담 장르의 서술방식을 변용함으로써 만년의 고심 끝에 진지한 비평의식을 『잡기고담』에 담아내게 되었음을 추론할 수 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 『잡기고담』의 논평을 분석한바, 그 특징적 면모로 첫째, 비교적 긴 길이의 논평이 갖는 지향이 서사의 지향을 초월하는 경우가 종종 확인된다는 점, 둘째, 논평의 형식에 대한 저자의 고민을 엿볼 수 있다는 점, 셋째, 비교적 다채롭고 생동감 있는 논평 서술방식의 시도를 보여준다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 특징적 양상으로 인해 『잡기고담』의 논평은, 형식적으로 고정된 틀에서 크게 벗어나지 않고 내용적으로 서사와 관련되는 데 한정되는 여타 야담의 일반적인 후평들과는 유다른 면모를 보이게 되었다. 이는 임매가『잡기고담』의 논평에서 무엇을 어떻게 논할 것인가와 관련하여 그 내용과 형식, 서술방식에 대해 치열하게 고민한 결과로 이해된다.

영문 초록

Jabki-godam is characterized by the fact that each story has a commentary. This paper attempted to investigate the characteristics of the commentary by examining the meaning orientation and description method of the commentary in earnest, as well as the form of the commentary. Accordingly, it was revealed that Immae was used at the age of 56-69, and Immae wrote Jabki-godam in his later years, basically using the writing method he has mainly used in prose writing, but using Yadam as the subject of commentary and revealing a more serious sense of criticism. As a result, it could be assumed that Immae captured his serious critical consciousness in Jabki-godam after a long period of consideration by changing the prose writing method he had mainly used and the narrative method of Yadam genre he was familiar with through his grandfather Imbang's Cheonyeok. Based on this, the analysis of the commentary showed that, first, the orientation of the relatively long commentary often transcends the narrative's orientation, second, the author's concern about the form of the commentary, and third, the commentary shows a relatively colorful and lively attempt to describe it. Because of this characteristic aspect, the comments of Jabki-godam are distinct from the general comments of Yadam, which are only related to the narrative in content, without departing much from the formal fixed framework. This is understood as the result of Im-mae's intense consideration of the content, form, and description method in relation to what and how to discuss in the commentary of Jabki-godam.
