현대사회와 불교 기반 대안공동체 운동 사례

국문 초록

전 세계적으로 성장은 정체되었고, 빈부격차, 고용불안, 고령화 등 심각한 사회경제적 불평등과 구조적 문제에 직면해 있다. 한국사회 또한 외환위기 이후 동일한 위기 상황에 처해 있으며, 무한경쟁과 각자도생의 길로 내몰리면서 공동체의 위기가 심화되고, 공적 가치가 실종되고 있다. 현재 우리 사회는 신자유주의적 사회구조와 이로 인한 무한경쟁으로 내몰린 삶에 대한 성찰과 반성으로 공동체를 주목하고 있다. 경제적 성장이 개인의 행복과 사회적 번영으로 연결되지 않는 지금의 시대에는 지역 기반의 대안공동체 복원을 통한 사회 전환은 반드시 도전해야 할 과제이다. 공동체는 종교계에도 주된 관심사이자, 핵심의제로 채택되고 있다. 가톨릭은 중앙집권적 역량으로 ‘소공동체 운동’과 같은 지역화 전략을 진행하고 있고, 개신교는 2010년부터 21세기 선교의 비전을 지역공동체와 문화선교에 두고 있다. 불교는 한국불교와 달리 해외의 불교계는 참여불교를 제시하며, 승가라는 역사적 전통과 경험을 바탕으로 불교의 교리를 현대사회의 흐름에 맞게 재해석하여 마을과 지역사회에서 공동체 운동을 펼쳐나가고 있다. 한편, 한국불교는 사회적 흐름과 달리 오랜 전통인 공동체를 스스로 해체하고 각자도생의 길로 걸어가 쇠락의 위기를 자초하고 있다. 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 불교 스스로 잃어버린 공동체의 전통을 복원하고, 지역에서 공동체를 구현함으로써 사회적 신뢰를 회복하여야 한다. 본 논문은 이를 위해 불교 기반에 의해 지역에서 대안적인 공동체 활동을 전개해 온 대표적인 사례들을 소개하고, 그 사례들로부터 한국사회의 대안공동체 운동에 주는 함의를 살펴보고자 한다. 물론 불교 기반 대안공동체 운동의 자료나 연구가 부족하고, 지면의 한계로 소개하고자 하는 사례들의 활동을 자세히 다 담을 수없는 한계는 있지만, 이를 통해 불교의 대안공동체 실천전략과 모델 정립을 위한 논의와 실천의 단초를 열고자 한다.

영문 초록

The world witnesses stagnant economy and faces serious socioeconomic inequality and structural problems such as the gap between rich and poor, employment insecurity and aging population. Korean society is also confronted with the same crisis since the financial crisis in 1987 and 2008. Due to limitless competition and survival of the fittest, the crisis of the community is getting worse and public values are disappearing. Currently, Korean society is paying attention to the community through reflection on the neoliberal social structure and the life that has been driven by limitless competition. In the present age, when economic growth is not linked to individual happiness and social prosperity, social transition through restoration of alternative community based on the region is a challenge. Community is also a major concern and a key agenda in the religious community. On the one hand, while Catholics are pursuing localization strategies such as the 'Small Community Movement' with a centralized competence, Protestant has been putting the vision of mission in the 21st century into the local community and cultural mission since 2010. Unlike Korean Buddhism, Overseas Buddhism suggests Engaged Buddhism. It reinterprets the doctrines of Buddhism on the basis of historical tradition and experience of Sangha in line with the currents of modern society, carrying out a community movement in villages and communities, On the other hand, Korean Buddhism, unlike the social trend, has dismantled its long tradition of community and walked in the path of survival of the fittest, causing a crisis of decline. In order to overcome the crisis, Buddhism must restore the tradition of the lost community and rebuild social trust by implementing community in the region. In this paper, I will introduce representative cases of alternative community activities in the region by Buddhist base and examine the implications of the cases to the alternative community movement in Korean society. With acknowledging the lack of data and researches on the activities of Buddhist-based alternative community movements and the limit of the paper, I want to open the stage of discussion and practice to establish alternative community practice strategies and models of Buddhism.
