문정왕후(文定王后) 시기 불화(佛畵)의 특징과 그 위상

국문 초록

본 논고는 문정왕후 발원 관련 불화의 특징과 그 위상을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 그 형식적 특징과 시대적 위상을 올바르게 진단하기 위해 당대의 전후 대표 작품들을 사례로 들어 비교고찰을 진행하였다. 이러한 비교고찰의 작업 중에 당대 대표 작품의 주요 제작자로서 이자실(李自實)이라는 화가의 활동이 핵심을 이루고 있다는 것을 알 수 있는데, 그는 공의왕대비 발원 <관세음보살32응탱(觀世音菩薩三十二應幀)>을 필두로 회암사(檜巖寺) 중수(重修) 기념 문정왕후 발원 탱화 군(群)에도 직접적으로 관여하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 본 논고를 통해 국내에 최초로 소개하는 이자실 필(筆)의 일본 사이묘지(西明寺) 소장 <아미타삼존도(阿彌陀三尊圖)>를 매개로 관련 유사 작례들의 고찰을 진행하였다. 이에 16세기 불화의 형식 및 양식에 결정적인 영향을 끼친 이자실의 작품이, 어떻게 조선 전기 왕실 발원 불화의 마지막 대미를 장식하게 되는지 살펴보았다. 이 마지막 왕실불화 양식은 문정왕후 시기 발원 불화와 불가분의 관계에 있으므로, 그러한 경향을 조선 전기 왕실 불화의 전체적 흐름 속에서 진단하였다. 전례없는 숭유억불시대임에도 불구하고, 조선 전기 왕실에서는 불화 불사(佛事)의 명맥이 면면히 이어지는데, 이러한 배경에는 그 후원의 주최로 대비(大妃)의 역할이 컸다. 정희왕후, 정현왕후, 인성왕후 그리고 마지막으로 문정왕후로 이어지는 왕실의 여인들의 역할이 실로 컸다. 이 같은 왕실 불사의 전통 선상에서 마지막 정점을 찍은 불사가 바로 문정왕후와 보우대사의 원력으로 진행된 불화 제작이다. 물론 명종대를 이어 선조대에도 비빈(妃嬪)들에 의해 왕실 양식 불화들이 제작되지만, 사실상 공개적인 국가차원의 불사는 문정왕후의 회암사 중수 기념 발원 탱화를 마지막으로 왕실 양식은 자취를 감추게 된다. 이에 조선전기의 왕실 발원불화의 양상(樣相)의 변화를 3단계로 나누어 설명하였다. 그리고 3형식의 비교를 통해, 전체 흐름 속에서 문정왕후 시기의 작품들이 어떠한 위치 또는 위상을 점하는지 논하였다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the characteristics and its status of Buddhist paintings originated and sponsored by Queen Munjeong (文 定王后). In order to expose the formal and stylistic characteristics of the paintings properly, a comparative study with representative works of that period was done. Through these observations, it could be confirmed that the artist Yi Jasil (李自實) is prominent as a major producer of the representative works. His capacity is known to the world first through the painting which Queen Inseong ordered. And he continues to mainly engaged in the Buddhist paintings commemorating the reconstruction of Hyoam Temple (檜巖寺) publi-cally sponsored by Queen Munjeong. In particular, in this paper introduced painting in Saimyouji (西明寺), Kyoto Japan with Yi Jasil sign of himself for the first time in Korea. This work, which is sure to be a work of interest, was compared with other similar works of that time. Through these analyzes, we have examined how the works of Lee Jasil, who had a decisive influence on the form and style of Buddhist painting in the sixteenth century, contributed to the end of Joseon dynasty royal Buddhist painting. Despite the era of suppressing Buddhism, Buddhist painting continues to be produced in the royal court of the Early Joseon period, which was possible by the patronage of the queens. The role of the sponsors of the queens, such as Queen Jeonghui, Queen Jeonghyeon, Queen Inseong and finally Queen Munjeong, was very great in maintaining the tradition. The last work of this royal Buddhist painting of the tradition is the Hyoam Temple's commemorative work which was led by Queen Munjeong and Monk Bowoo. In fact, Buddhist works of art at the national public level disappear after this work which means the end of the royal style. Finally, the change of the aspect of royal Buddhist painting in the Joseon Dynasty was divided into three stages and explained focusing on the final step of Queen Munjeong's period. Through the comparison of the three steps, the characteristics and positions of the works of Queen Munjeong's period was examined in the overall tendency of royal court style of the Early Joseon Dynasty.
