국문 초록

화이관(華夷觀)은 문화적인 중국과 변방의 야만을 규정하는 중 국문화의 특수한 측면이다. 인도문화권의 불교가 중국으로 전래하는 과정에서, 화이관은 불교의 정당성을 비판하는 논거로 자주 등장한다. 본고는 화이관에 입각한 동아시아의 불교비판들을 정리하고, 백곡 당시에 화이관의 문제가 재점화되는 이유와 백곡의 대응에 대해서 검토해 본 것이다. 이를 위해서 제Ⅱ장에서는, 중국의 화이관에 따른 불교비판의 역사와 내용을 정리한다. 화이관에 의한 불교비판은 불교 전래의 초기로까지 소급될 수 있으며, 성리학의 고려 전래와 함께 고려말부터는 한국사 안에서도 살펴진다. 이는 화이관의 강조가 성리학과 연관되어 있다는 점을 분명히 해준다. 화이관에 의한 불교비판은 조선 후기인 백곡의 시대에 비중 있는 문제로 대두한다. 이는 조선의 소중화(小中華) 의식 강화에 따른 결과이다. 이 같은 시대적 요청에 입각해 백곡은 그의 ｢간폐석교소｣에서 이 문제를 가장 먼저 다루게 된다. 다음으로 제Ⅲ장에서는 백곡 이전에 존재하던 화이관에 입각한 불교비판에 대한 반론 내용을 정리한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 백곡의 반론구조와 내용을 점검한다. 이렇게 해서 확인되는 것은, 백곡이 기존에 존재하던 두 가지의 반론 논리를 선후의 층위를 나누어 재정리하고 있다는 점. 그리고 보다 다양한 사례와 유교적인 지식의 활용으로 논거를 치밀하게 완성하고 있다는 것 등을 알게 된다.

영문 초록

The concept of Hwa-Yi (華夷) is a special aspect of Chinese culture that distinguished the cultural China from the barbarians in the border. In the process that the Buddhism in the Indian culture was brought to China, the concept of Hwa-Yi (華夷) was often used to criticize the justification of Buddhism. This paper summarizes the criticisms of East Asia on the Buddhism based on the Hwa-Yi concept, and reviews the reasons that the Hwa-Yi concept was re-candled during the days of Baek-gok (白谷) as well as the Baek-gok’s response. For this purpose, chapter II deals with the history and contents of Buddhist criticism according to Chinese philosophy of Hwa-Yi. The Buddhist criticism based on the Hwa-Yi concept can be traced back to the early days of Buddhist introduction, and it is also examined in Korean history from the end of the Goryeo period when the Seongrihak (性理學) was introduced to Goryeo. This makes it clear that the emphasis of Hwa-Yi concept was related to the Seongrihak. The Buddhist criticism based on the Hwa-Yi concept was seriously raised during the days of Baek-gok in the Late Joseon Era. This was resulted by the strengthened concept that Joseon was a small Jungwha (小中華). Based on this demands of the times, Baek-gok first dealt with the problem in his ｢Ganpyeseokgyoso｣. The next chapter III summarizes the objections to the Buddhist criticisms based on the Hwa-Yi concept that had existed before Baekgok. With this, the structure and content of Baek-gok’s objection to the Buddhist criticism are examined. What is confirmed in this way is that Baek-gok rearranged the existing two layers of oppositional logics into pre- and post- layers, and that he completed the argument more thoroughly using diverse examples and the Confucian knowledge.
