국문 초록

함석헌은 한국 현대의 역사적 상황에서 당대의 타락한 기독교를 향해 예언자적 질타를 쏟아냈다. 그는 1950년대 초반 시 「흰 손」과 「대선언」을 통해 한국 교회가 믿고 있는 피상적 속죄론과 실천적 희생이 없는 물질적 타락을 비판하고, 종파주의 적 입장을 뛰어넘는 종교 다원주의적 입장을 선언한다. 그리고 1950년대 중반 “새 시대의 종교”와 “한국 기독교는 무엇을 하고 있는가”를 발표한 이후로부터 한국교회가 한국 사회에서 정신적 역할을 할 것을 요청했다. 하지만 그의 이러한 사회 참여론은 기독교의 보편성을 강력하게 주장하는 신론으로 나타난다. 그는 종교철학적으로 범재신론자로서 헤겔의 역사철학, 과정철학자 화이트 헤드와 창 조적 진화 개념의 베르그송, 인도 종교의 범신론적 사상과 간디의 평화사상, 내재 신론자로서 천도교의 인간관 등이 모두 혼재하는, 동서양을 아우르는 독특한 한국 적인 종교사상가로서의 면모를 보여준다.

영문 초록

Seok-Hun Ham poured out prophetic rebukes against corruption in Christianity in modern Korea. Ham emphasized the public role and social participation of Christianity. In Ham’s poems “White Hands” and “The Grand Declaration,” published in the early 1950s, he criticizes the superficial atonement theory held by the Korean church and material gain without practical sacrifice, and argues for religious pluralism over sectarianism. In Religion of the New Era and What Korean Christianity Is Doing, published in the mid-1950s, Ham asked that the Korean church play a spiritual role in Korean society through the establishment of a correct philosophy of history and public participation. However, his theory of social participation appears as a theology that strongly insists on the universality of Christianity. His ideas that emphasize universal Christianity have the following characteristics; Hegel's philosophy of history as a pantheist, Whitehead, a process philosopher, Bergson of the concept of creative evolution, the pantheistic thought of Indian religion and Gandhi's thought of peace, and as an immanent theist, Chondoism's view of man, etc. It shows the aspect as a unique Korean religious thinker that is different from the existing traditional Christian theology.
