고대 갑주의 의례적 성격 - 고분 출토품을 중심으로

국문 초록

기왕의 갑주 연구는 정치적이고 기술적인 측면에만 중점을 두는 경향이 강하다. 그러나 고대 갑주 자료의 대부분은 무덤에서 출토되는 부장품이며 갑주의 용도인 방어적 기능과는 관련 없는 부분이 적지 않다. 이러한 점에서 갑주는 의례적 성격도 갖추었다고 할 수 있는데 그것이 가지고 있는 의미가 무엇인지 고려해 볼 목적에서 사례를 중심으로 초보적인 검토를 하였다. 본고는 먼저 갑주가 고분에 부장되는 물품 이외의 어떤 의례적 성격이 있는지 살펴보았다. 종장판갑은 4세기대 대표적인 갑주이면서 방어적 기능과 상관없는 다양한 문양을 가지고 있다. 종장판갑은 다양한 문양과 더불어 조립이나 제작에 완성도가 낮은 부장품이 적지 않은데 이 점은 전쟁에서 사용되었던 무구로 보기 어려우며 그중 와문과 털 장식 등은 벽사와 관련된 기복 신앙과 연관지어 이해할 수 있다. 갑주는 고분 이외에도 사찰이나 주거지에서 찰갑이 출토되는 사례가 있다. 본고는 사찰의 경우 공양보다 의식과 관련된 성격으로 추정해 보았다. 주거지에서 찰갑이 출토되는 사례는 백제지역이 많다. 최근 함안에서 확인된 아라가야 궁성지로 추정되는 유적 출토 소찰도 병기고로 보았으나 면밀한 검토가 필요하다. 다음으로 무덤에서 출토된 갑주에서 나타나는 의례적 성격을 살펴보기 위해서 복천동고분군의 사례를 검토해 보았다. 갑주 부장의 일정한 경향성은 찾기 어려웠지만 고분을 축조하면서 행해진 의례나 공헌을 목적으로 한 부장품이 확인되며 이외에도 벽사와 관련하여 부장되었을 가능성도 고려해 볼 수 있다. 고대인에게 갑주는 본고가 살펴본 바와 같이 다양한 목적으로 사용되었기에 향후 다양한 문제의식을 가지고 연구가 이루어질 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Studies on ancient armor have tended to focus on their political or technical aspects. However, attention also needs to be paid to the fact that most of the examples of ancient armor were grave goods found in ancient tombs, and many of them appear to have had nothing to do with a defensive function, which is the basic purpose of body armor. As such, this study conducted an elementary review of ancient armor finds, with focus on their ceremonial functions. First of all, this study considered what other possible ceremonial functions armor may have served, in addition to its function as a grave good. Vertical plate armor is representative of the 4th century, but examples do not exhibit diverse decorative patterns, nor are they associated with a defensive function. As such, taking into consideration their decorative patterns and inferior quality, the opinion that vertical plate armor was not made to protect the wearer has been proposed. It is suspected, rather, that the bracken pattern, fur accessories, etc. were associated with the purpose of warding off evil sprits. Some examples of armor have been unearthed from temple sites or residential areas, and not tombs. It is presumed in this study that those examples unearthed from temple sites had served a ceremonial purpose, such as a buried gift to the gods. The example of lamellar armor recently unearthed from a site in Haman (which is presumed to have been a royal palace of Aragaya) may have also been intended as a buried gift to the gods, rather than as a part of a military equipment set. In this regard, it appears that the examples of lamellar unearthed from the residential areas of Baekje should be carefully checked in the future. The ancient tombs of Bokcheon-dong were also examined in this study in order to ascertain whether the armor deposited in the tombs had originally been designed for ceremonial functions. This study could not find a certain pattern but it is presumed that they may have been buried to ward off evil spirits. This study could not establish all of the functions of ancient armor. It is therefore proposed that those researchers involved in the study of ancient armor should, in the future, attempt to shed light on armor (which were used for a variety of purposes) from diverse perspectives.
