국문 초록

본 연구는 연구자가 아프리카 말라위에서 2013년 8월부터 2016년 1월까지 한 마을 내 학습센터를 운영해온 경험을 바깥 놀이를 중심으로 재구성하였으며, 연구일지, 사진, 동영상 자료, 그리고 교사와의 면담자료 등의 참여 관찰을 통해서 연구 자료를 수집하였다. 연구 결과, 바깥 놀이를 통해서 유아들은 자유와 즐거움을 경험하고 있었으며, 이러한 경험은 유아 개인에서 또래, 교사와의 관계로 확장이 되며, 궁극적으로 이웃 주민, 그리고 마을 전체로 확장해 간다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해, ‘바깥’이라는 공간은 아이들의 일상과 삶의 연장선 속에서 그들의 문화적 정체성을 대변해주는 ‘공간적 장소’이자 ‘교육의 매개체’ 그 자체로서 의미를 갖는다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 종합적으로 오늘날 우리의 교육 현실에서 작은 문화의 맥락에서 바깥 놀이는 의미있는 교육적 시사점을 제공하였다.

영문 초록

This study reconstructed researcher’s experience of running community learning centre located in a small village of Zomba in Malawi, Africa from August 2013 to January 2016, focusing on outdoor play of Naphini Nursery which is one of the programs run during the morning hours at the centre. This study mainly looks into the children’s experiences when they play outside of class. Data were collected through participatory observation for which the researcher prepared journals, took pictures, recorded videos and made interviews with teachers. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Outdoor plays made children enjoy the feelings of freedom and delight. Those feelings were then extended to their relationships with peers and teachers and ultimately with neighbors and the entire village. These findings showed that ‘outdoor is a ‘space which represents children s cultural identity on the continuum of their lives and a medium of education for children. In conclusion, outdoor play may have significant implications in relation to the realities and cultural contexts of education.
