일제강점기 세키노 다다시(關野貞)의 고구려와전 연구 비판

국문 초록

고구려의 와전류에 대한 연구는 일제강점기의 관학자인 세키노 다다시에 의해 시작되었다고 하더라도과언이 아니다. 세키노가 본격적으로 한반도의 고적을 조사하기 시작한 1909년부터 1935년에 사망할 때까지, 그의 고구려와전에 대한 관심은 발표한 논문이나 저술 이외에도 일기에서 확인할 수 있다. 고구려의 왕성이 위치했던 중국과 북한지역에서 집중적으로 발견되는 고구려의 와전류에 대한 접근이 쉽지 않은 한국학계의 현 상황에서, 일제강점기에 세키노가 집성한 방대한 자료들은 현재의 연구에도 중요하게 활용되고있다. 하지만 세키노가 고구려의 와전류로 집성한 자료들이 모두 고구려 시대에 제작된 것인가에 대한 검증은 지금까지 한 번도 시도되지 않았다. 이에 본 연구는 세키노가 기와연구를 시작하게 된 계기와 역사해석에서 기와를 활용하는 방법을 살펴본 후, 그가 고구려 와전류를 집성하는 과정 및 연구의 문제점을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. 세키노는 1896년부터 1901년까지 일본 나라현의 건축기사로 활동하면서 기와가 가지는 역사해석의 유효성을 인식해 유적에 활용하고 있었다. 이 때의 경험을 바탕으로 세키노는 한반도의 고적조사를 하면서도와전류에 대한 꾸준한 관심을 갖고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 특히 고구려의 와전류에 대한 그의 특별한 관심은 『朝鮮古蹟圖譜』 및 『高句麗時代之遺蹟』에 상당수의 자료가 집성된 것을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 하지만 그가 고구려의 와전류를 집성하게 되는 과정에서 발생한 현지 컬렉터들과의 유착관계 때문에 수많은 고구려의 유물이 반출되는 결과를 초래하게 된 점은 비판을 면할 수 없다. 또한 그가 집성한 와전류가 고구려 당시의 것이라는 근본적인 검증을 하지 않은 점이나, 고구려와전으로 보고한 유물의 연대관에 대한 충분한근거를 제시하지 못한 점, 그리고 식민지사관에 입각해 고구려 문화가 중국에 종속되어 있었다는 시각은, 심각하게 왜곡된 역사해석의 발로이며 불완전한 고구려와전에 관한 연구였다고 결론지을 수 있다. 한편, 본 연구에서는 세키노가 집성한 유물 중에서 고구려의 와전으로 판단이 가능한 것들을 선별하는작업도 실시했다. 비록 세키노의 자료가 정확한 출토지나 층위를 파악하기 어렵고 채집된 유물이라는 태생적인 한계를 가지는 집성자료가 많다고 하더라도, 그가 집성한 자료 중 일부를 향후의 고구려와전 연구에서 활용할 수 있는 근거를 마련했다는 점에서도 본 연구가 가지는 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

It is no exaggeration to say that the study of the Goguryeo bricks and roof tiles is begun by Tadashi Sekino, a state scholar in Japanese colonial era. When Sekino began to investigate historical sites on the Korean Peninsula in earnest was 1909, and he died in 1935. Until then, his interest in Goguryeo roof tiles and bricks can be found in his diary in addition to his published papers and writings. The Korean academic community has difficulty to access to the Goguryeo bricks and roof tiles. Since the royal castles of Goguryeo were located in China and North Korea, bricks and roof tiles were excavated intensively there. In this situation, a large amount of material that Sekino wrote in Japanese colonial era is still important for research. On the other hand, there has never been a single attempt to verify whether the roof tiles and bricks used in the materials written by Sekino were all made during the Goguryeo period or not. This paper aim to find out the problems of Sekino’s collection process and research by reviewing the reason why Sekino started the tile study and how to utilize the tile in interpretation of history. The roof tile was used in historical analysis by Sekino. It is because he was an authorized architect in Nara Prefecture, Japan from 1896 to 1901, and he recognized the value of roof tiles as a historical material. Based on this experience, it can be seen that Sekino has a steady interest in roof tiles and bricks while conducting a historical survey of the Korean Peninsula. In particular, his special interest in Goguryeo roof tiles and bricks can be confirmed through the collection of a number of materials in the books 『朝鮮古蹟圖譜』 and 『高句麗時代之遺蹟』. However, he cannot avoid criticism that it resulted in taking out of numerous Goguryeo relics because of the collusive ties he formed in the process of collecting the Goguryeo roof tiles and bricks. The roof tiles and bricks he collected belonged to the Goguryeo era and did not provide sufficient evidence for the period of roof tiles and bricks. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the perspective that Goguryeo culture was subordinate to China based on the colonial view of history was a revelation of severely distorted historical analysis and an incomplete study of Goguryeo roof tiles and bricks.
