불교 출가수행의 교육학적 의미: 자리행(自利行)과 이타행(利他行)을 중심으로

국문 초록

불교의 출가수행은 가정과 사회를 떠나 자신만의 깨달음을 추구함으로써 가정이나 사회의 구성원으로서 짊어져야 할 최소한의 책임이나 의무도 이행하지 않는다는 점에서 사회·윤리적인 면에서 비판을 받았다. 이 점을 염두에 두고 불교계에서는 출가수행이 자리행이면서 동시에 이타행이라는 점을 강조한다. 본 연구에서는 이 주장의 의미를 이해하기 위하여 자리행과 이타행의 관계와 그 속에 들어있는 자리행과 이타행 각각의 의미를 고찰하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면, 자리행은 출가수행자가 수행의 기반인 생멸심의 본래 모습을 회복할 수 있도록 눈앞에 보이는 사물이나 현상의 본질을 있는 그대로 통찰하고자 노력하는 것이며, 이타행은 다른 사람이 출가자 자신과 동일한 일을 하도록 함으로써 생멸심의 본래의 모습을 회복하도록 하는 것이다. 이 경우 자리행과 이타행은 수행의 내용도 수행의 결과도 동일한 것으로 된다. 이것은 교육 활동을 할 때 교사와 학생이 모두 심성함양이라는 동일한 결과를 얻기 위하여 동일한 일을 하는 것과 마찬가지이다.

영문 초록

Becoming a Buddhist priest means to leave his family and society to seek to do his enlightenment. So he is blamed morally and socially because he don t hold himself responsible for his family and society. Therefore Buddhism underlines that Buddhist priest is to do practice for others(利他行) as well as only practice for priest himself(自利行). To understand the meaning of this underlining, this study is clarify the meaning of only practice for priest himself and the meaning of practice for others, and the relationship between only practice for priest himself and practice for others. According to the result of this study, only practice for priest himself is to give a real insight into the nature of the phenomenon so that Buddhist priest can retore the original form of the mind of extinction(生滅心), the basis of practice. The practice for others is to restore the original form of the mind of extinction by making others do the same thing as himself. In this case, the two practices will have the same content of practice and the same result of practice. This is like doing the same thing for both teachers and students to achieve the same result of cultivating mind.
