국문 초록

「사랑의 역사」에서 인격함양은 사랑이 사랑이라는 기초 위에 사랑을 세우는 과정으로 규정된다. 사랑을 심어줄 수 있는 것은 오직 신뿐이며, 인간은 사랑이 있다는 것을 가정할 수 있을 뿐이다. 키에르케고르는 사랑의 존재를 가정하는 것이 다른 사람을 인격함양으로 이끄는 방안이 된다고 주장한다. ‘사랑의 존재를 가정하는 것’에는 신의 개입을 확신한다는 의미와 함께, 다른 사람이 홀로 서도록 전심으로 도와주면서 겸손한 자세로 자신의 역할과 존재를 감춘다는 의미가 들어 있다. 인격함양을 위한 조력자의 실천은 ‘중복’의 원리를 따른다. 즉, 그것은 한 사람 안에서 형성되는 신-관계와 동일한 것이 다른 사람 안에 ‘복제’되고 그 과정에서 그가 베푸는 조력이 ‘무한히 증폭되어’ 그 자신에게 되돌아오는 그런 방식으로 이루어진다. 학생을 인격함양으로 이끄는 교사의 활동은 그와 같은 실천을 예시하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 인격함양에 대한 설명의 타당성은 그 설명이 거기에 참여하는 사람들의 인격을 함양시켜줄 수 있는가의 여부에 달려 있다. 인격함양을 사랑의 역사로 설명하는 키에르케고르의 담화는 독자의 인격을 함양시켜주는 실천의 모범사례로 간주될 만하다.

영문 초록

‘To build up’ is used as a metaphorical expression in the New Testament. Upbuilding as love’s most characteristic specification means love’s building up love on the ground of love in Kierkegaard’s Works of Love. For him, one human being cannot implant love in another human being’s heart, in that it is only God who can implant love in each human being. The best that one can do is to presuppose that love is in the other person’s heart, and by this very presupposition the one who loves builds up love in him. It implies that by hiding his help the human helper can help him to stand by himself. The loving one’s self-annihilation is needed in order not to hinder the other person’s God-relationship. Upon God’s entering in, his presence and role must be erased, which nonetheless means his salvation. Kierkegaard’s concept of ‘redoubling’ applies in describing how the loving one’s practice for helping the other person’s upbuilding is possible. When the eternal redoubles in the loving one’s being, he helps the other person to ‘reduplicate’ what is redoubled in him, and receives what he gives to the other person by God’s repeating it ‘with magnification of infinity.’ The teacher who helps his pupil to upbuild exemplifies the principle of redoubling according to which the loving one practices for the one helped. This principle requires the teacher to take the role of ‘God’s co-worker.’ That a discourse on upbuilding itself is upbuilding can serve as the criterion which a discourse on upbuilding must meet, ‘for only the truth that builds up is truth for you.’ Kierkegaard’s discourse on upbuilding shows that a good discourse itself can help its readers to upbuild.
