한국 제3문화 성인아이들 (Korean Adult Third Culture Kids)의 사회적응에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 해외에서 성장기의 일부를 보낸 제3문화 아이들(Third Culture Kids, TCK)이 귀국 후에 제3문화 성인아이들(Adult Third Culture Kids, ATCK)로서 한국사회에 적응하는 과정에서 겪은 심리사회적 경험들을 사례를 통해 연구한 질적 연구이다. 참가자는 영어권에서 자란 세 명의 ATCK이며 반구조화 된 면접을 통하여 수집된 자료는 주제 분석 방법을 활용하여 분석되었고 나타난 주제들은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 참여자들의 한국사회 정착결정은 부모의 영향으로 이루어졌으나 과정은 과거 문화 경험의 성격이나 소속감의 정도, 결혼 여부와 한국에서의 진로 여정 등에 따라 달랐다. 참가자들의 언어 능력은 경제적 안전망이 되어 주었고 유사문화 집단이 안전한 사회적 지지집단역할을 했다. 주류 문화적응 과정에서는 모두 과거와 현재 문화의 차이로 인한 갈등과 어려움을 경험하였고 각자의 해결 방법에 따라 다양한 진로 여정을 걸었다. 모든 참가자들은 ATCK인 자신의 삶에 대해 긍정적이었으나 문화적 방관자로서 국제 시민으로서의 미래를 구상하였다. 본 연구는, 최근 국내에서 그 수나 관심이 증가하는 ATCK들이 겪는 한국사회 적응과정의 다양하고 복잡한 심리사회적 경험들을 탐색한 연구라는 점에서 의의가 있으며 연구결과를 기초로 하여 ATCK에 대한 상담적 제안을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study is a case study that explored the psychosocial experiences of South Korean Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCK) in the process of adapting to South Korean society after returning to Korea. Participants were three South Korean ATCK who spent part of their developmental years in English speaking countries. The collected data were analyzed thematic analysis method and the identified themes are as follows. First, all participants’ decision to settle in South Korea was made under the influence of their parents. However, their experiences of social adaptation in South Korea differed based on their own unique perspectives regarding cultural experiences from the past, marriage, and career path. Second, participants experienced benefits from their multilingual skills and social group of similar multi-cultural background. Third, due to cultural differences, adapting to the mainstream of South Korean culture created conflicts and difficulties which made them seek out their career path according to their own solutions. All participants were ultimately positive about their lives in South Korea as ATCK. Based on the results the implications for counseling are discussed.
