초등학교 6학년의 학교생활과 사고체계 탐색: 거주 배경의 차이를 중심으로

국문 초록

6학년 문화에 대한 병리적 접근은 기성세대와 이들의 심리적 거리를 이격시킬 뿐 아니라 이들에 대한 부정적 인식을 강화하여 적절한 교육을 어렵게 할 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한 이 연구는 초등학교 6학년 학생들의 학교생활과 사고체계를 이들의 관점에서 구성하는 데 일차적인 목적을 두었다. 특히 이 연구에서는 사회경제적 배경이나 거주지의 여건을 비롯한 문화의 형성적 요인에 주목하면서 이들의 학교생활과 사고체계를 분석하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 연구자들은 초등학교 6학년 교실에 대한 관찰과 함께 학생들과의 심층면담을 수행하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 학생들의 학교생활 실태는 ‘유튜브의 일상화와 이면의 피상성’, ‘표면적 협력과 이면의 경쟁’, ‘적극적인 수업참여와 이면의 보상’, ‘아싸와 인싸의 경계 짓기’, ‘몸과 마음이 편히 쉴 수 있는 학교’ 등의 모습으로 나타났다. 다음으로 자아인식, 학교와 친구에 대한 인식, 어른과 우리나라에 대한 인식 등을 비롯한 학생들의 사고체계는 거주 배경에 따라 상이하게 나타나는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 6학년 학생들의 생활실태와 사고체계를 긴밀히 연결하여 이들의 문화를 조명하였으며, 이러한 문화가 학생들의 사회경제적 배경에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지, 그럼에도 불구하고 학교는 이들에게 어떠한 의미를 갖는지를 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Situated in the South Korean context that there is an increasing social concern on 6th graders and the denigration of their value system, this qualitative study sought to understand the culture of 6th graders by collecting and analyzing data from a series of participatory observations and in-depth interview. Throughout the data collection and analysis, this study paid a special attention to formative factors such as socioeconomic status and school district that might have impact on individual students’ school lives and their belief systems. Major findings are as follows. First of all, the life of 6th graders was closely engaged with the Youtube; and they used the Youtube as a great tool for entertainment. Second, in spite of an increasing emphasis on cooperative learning, the students’ ways of participating in group activities were closer to a division of labor than a genuine cooperation. Third, their self-identification was based on their perceived pressure of academic achievement or anxiety about their relationship with peers. Surrounded by these circumstances, the students perceived the times that they spend in the schools and classrooms as those for relaxation or play. Finally, this study revealed that the students’ school lives and value systems are quite dependent upon their parents’ socioeconomic status and school district. The discussion highlights what should older generations and school mean to our students.
