미술을 통한 자기이해는 어떻게 가능한 것인가?

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 미술과 교육과정에 제시된 ‘자기 자신과 세계를 이해하는 인간의 활동’이라는 미술의 정의에 근거해 ‘미술을 통한 자기 이해는 가능한 것인가?’, ‘가능하다면 어떻게 가능한 것인가?’를 질문하였다. 이를 위하여 자신을 직접적으로 지시하는 장르인 ‘자화상’을 통해 미술에서 자신을 다루는 방식을 알아보고 미술이 자신의 이해에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 그 결과 미술은 봄과 보여짐의 거리를 통해 자기 이해의 계기를 마련하고, 물질화를 통하여 자기 이해의 구체성을 확보하며, 매체의 변화를 통하여 자기 이해를 확장할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 ‘할 수 있는 것’에 지나치게 초점을 맞추어 온 우리의 현실 교육에서 앞으로의 미술교육은 미술을 통한 자기 이해가 가능한 방식으로 모색되어야 함을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This paper puts forth questions Is it possible to understand idendity through fine art? , If so, how is it possible? . Such questions result from the definition of fine art as human behaviour to comprehend themselves and the world as indicated in the National Curriculum for Fine Art. It was assumed that self-portrait as a genre of art that involves directly referring to oneself would reveal how humans deal with themselves in the form of fine art. In other word, it could show how the art form makes contributions for humans to understand themselves. It is found that fine art is a means of self understanding through such processes: (a) creating opportunities to reflect on idendity via the differences between who I am looked at by myself and who I am looked at by others ; (b) establishing concreteness and specifications of self understanding by adding substance and materials; (c) extending the scope of self understanding utilizing various technology and media. This suggests that the current focus of fine art education, what you can do , may have to change the direction to encourage learners to look at, reflect on and comprehend themselves.
