국문 초록

이 논문은 교육과 올바른 삶의 관계가 무엇인가를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 통념적으로 생각하면 교육은 사회에서 사람들이 합의한 교육의 목표나 소위 올바르다고 믿는 삶의 목적을 달성하는 수단이 된다. 이 경우 올바른 삶은 시대마다 사람들의 통념에 따라 결정되는 것 또는 그저 각자 나름대로 좋다고 생각하는 것을 가리킬 뿐, 항구적 가치를 지니는 것이 될 수 없다. 이와는 달리 올바른 삶이 무엇이며 그것이 왜 옳은 것인가는 교육에 의해 드러난다는 입장이 있을 수 있다. 이 관점에 의하면 무엇이 올바른 것인가는 교육에 의하여 규정되며 동시에 그 올바름은 교육이 그 올바름을 추구한다는 사실로부터 정당화되는 것이다. 이러한 생각을 보여 주는 것이 바로 플라톤의 「국가론」이다.

영문 초록

In Plato s the Republic, Socrates deals with the meaning of justice. His view on justice is different of his counterparts views. According to Kephalos, justice means observing norms which are considered as common sense by most people. Thrasimachos asserts that justice means the powerful man s self-interest. Glaucon argues that justice is merely a matter of fact convenience, and a contrast between the perfectly just and perfectly unjust man shows conclusively that injustice is the more paying proposition. Socrates counterparts think that nature is confronted with convention. They assert that it leaves the problem of the observance of convention to an individual discretion. On the contrary, Socrates asserts that nature cannot be separated with convention. When he explains nature as the form of convention, it means that nature is the standard of judgement on conventional life. Nature as the form of convention exists in convention. But at the same time, its form is prior to convention. Briefly speaking, nature is prior to convention, but on the other hand, is posterior to convention. Socrates explains the problem about the origin and the justification of justice. From Socratic perspective, education is an activity that defines justice and realize it. In a manner of speaking, the problem of the definition and the justification of justice are solved by education. In the process of education, it is defined of the meaning of justice, and justice is realized. Namely, education is the process of the realization of justice, and justice is defined by education.
