국문 초록

본 연구는 지식의 성격에 관한 폴라니의 논의를 원용하여 교과의 내면화를 설명하고자 한다. 객관주의 과학철학은 지식과 그 근거, 그리고 사람을 서로 서로 분리가능한 것으로 간주하면서 그 분리가능성을 바탕으로 지식의 성립가능성을 주장한다. 폴라니는 이러한 객관주의 과학철학을 비판하면서 그에 대하여 대안이 되는 이론을 제시한다. 폴라니에게 있어서 지식의 근거 혹은 기준이 되는 것은 ‘실재로서의 합리성’이라고 불릴 수 있는데, 이 근거에는 이미 사람이 포함되어 있다. 그것은 근거와 사람의 일치요, 자연과 사람의 일치이다. 과학자가 자연 현상에 들어 있는 합리성을 식별하고자 노력하듯이, 학생들은 식별된 합리성(예컨대 코페르니쿠스의 태양중심설)에 대한 설명을 보고 거기에 들어 있는 합리성을 포착하고자 노력한다. 그러므로 어느 학생이 태양중심설과 같은 과학적 지식을 습득하였다면 그 이면에서는 합리성의 실현이 일어났다고 보아야 하는데, 이 이면적 사건이 바로 지식의 내면화이다. 지식의 내면화 즉 합리성의 실현은 존재의 변화를 의미한다. 폴라니에게 있어서는 지식과 사람도 분리불가능하다. 이렇게 사람으로부터 분리불가능한 지식을 가리켜 폴라니는 ‘퍼스널한 지식’이라고 부른다. 지식이 퍼스널하다는 말은, 사람은 지식의 발견과 검증에 적극적으로 참여한다는 점, 앎은 일종의 기술이고 행동이라는 점, 지식 탐구에는 발견의 열정과 설득의 열정이 개입한다는 점 등으로 설명된다. 이러한 여러 가지 요점들은 내면화의 의미를 경험적인 용어로 설명해 준다고 할 수 있다. 사람이 지식의 발견이나 학습에 당사자적으로 참여하고 그것을 지식으로 성립시키는 데에 당사자적으로 참여한다는 말은, 사람이 그 일에 자신의 존재를 개입시킨다는 말로 바뀔 수도 있다.

영문 초록

This study tries to explain the internalization of the subjects, that is, the internalization of the knowledge on the basis of the perspectives of M. Polanyi who was searching for the nature of the knowledge. Objectivist philosophy of science regards the knowledge, its ground and the person who searches for it as separable from each other. Polanyi criticized that philosophy and was searching for the alternative theory. In Polanyi s theory, the ground of knowledge could be called rationality as reality which is the unity of the ground of knowledge and person who searches for knowledge. As a scientist tries to discern the rationality in the nature, a student of science tries to recognize the rationality in the book which explains in words discerned rationality(for example, helio-centric theory of Copernicus). Thus, if a student of science acquires some body of knowledge, on the another plane realization of rationality happens, which is equivalent to the internalization of the knowledge. In Polanyi s theory, the knowledge and the person who searches for it are regarded as inseparable from each other. The knowledge which isn t separable from the person is called Personal Knowledge. It means that persons participate in the process of the discovery and the verification of the knowledge. It also means that knowing is a kind of skill and a kind of skillful doing. And finally it means that the aspiration of the discovery and the aspiration of the persuasion are needed in searching for the knowledge. These points explain the internalization of the subjects in phenomenal terms, not in noumenal terms.
