국문 초록

이 연구는 중학교 교사의 학생자치 활성화를 위한 노력과 경험을 통해 그 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 Clandinin & Connelly의 내러티브 접근 방법을 사용하여 넓게 보기, 깊이 바라보기, 이야기하기와 다시 이야기하기로 자료를 분석하였다. 학생자치 활성화 넓고 깊게 바라보기에서 교사는 학생자치 활성화를 위해 소속감 느끼기, 성공 경험 쌓기, 의사결정 체계 갖추기를 하였다. 학생자치의 현실은 교사와 학생 모두 학생자치에 대한 인식이 부족했으며 학생자치를 위한 시간과 공간 역시 부족했다. 학생회 활동에 따른 집행부 사이에 불만과 갈등이 있었고, 학생회 활동에 대한 학교장의 의지와 예산 활용의 어려움이 있었다. 이 연구를 수행하면서 학생자치 활성화를 위해 관계의 힘, 민주적 의사결정과 소통의 중요성에 대한 의미를 찾을 수 있었다. 그동안은 학생자치의 외연적 확대를 위해 노력해 왔다면 지금부터는 학생자치가 학교에 공고히 뿌리 내릴 수 있도록 하기 위한 세심한 노력이 필요하다. 결과를 바탕으로 학생자치 활성화를 위한 제언을 하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교 교육과정 안에 학생들의 다양한 자치 활동을 위한 시간이 필요하다. 둘째, 학생자치를 전담할 부장교사가 필요하다. 셋째, 학생자치 활성화를 위해서는 민주적인 학교문화가 반드시 선행되어야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore a middle school teacher’s experience of and effort for promoting student autonomy and its significance. To this end, Clandinin & Connelly s narrative approach was used to analyze the data based on broadening, burrowing, storying and restorying. For broadening and burrowing the promotion of student autonomy, the teacher went through feeling a sense of belonging, having success experiences and establishing a decision-making system to support student autonomy. In reality, both the teacher and students lacked awareness of student autonomy, and there was also insufficient time and space for student autonomy. There were complaints and conflicts about student council activities between the executives, the principal did not support the activities properly, and it was difficult to utilize the budget. This study provided the opportunity to explore the significance the power of relations and democratic decision-making and communication for the promotion of student autonomy. While there had been efforts for the external expansion of student autonomy, it is now necessary to make careful efforts to have student autonomy firmly rooted in school. Based on the results, this study presents the following suggestions for activating student autonomy: First, it is required to provide students with time for various autonomous activities in the school curriculum. Second, senior teachers dedicated to student autonomy are required. Third, a democratic school culture must be preceded to promote student autonomy.
