서소문성지역사박물관 건립의 의의와 과제

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 신생 서소문성지역사박물관의 건립 배경과 추진 과정에 대한 분석을 통해 이 박물관의 현주소를 진단하고 이를 토대로 박물관이 나가야 할 방향을 모색하려는 것이다. 서소문성지역사박물관이 자리한 지역은 조선 이래 ‘서소문밖 네거리’로 불리웠던 곳으로 한성부 ‘성저십리’(도성 외곽 4km 반경) 최대의 상업 지역이자 한국 최대의 순교성지로 기억되는 곳이다. 따라서 이 지역의 ‘장소성’과 ‘역사성’은 신생 박물관의 정체성을 정립하는 근간이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 한국박물관학회가 제42회 학술대회에 즈음해 채택한 ‘뮤지엄, 지역공동체와 유산해석’이 계기가 되어 시작되었으며, 학술대회의 주제와 서소문성지역사박물관의 향방을 연계해 살펴보려 한다. 오늘의 박물관은 전에 없는 강도의 변화를 요청받고 있다. 지배이념과 권력의 도구로 이용되어 온 과거의 근대적 노정에 대해 반성하고, 동시대의 사회적 이슈에 능동적으로 대처하며, 공공성과 다양성의 가치를 보호하는 사회교육기관으로 인식되고 있다. 서소문성지역사박물관은 운영주체가 천주교 서울대교구이지만 교구장은 이 박물관이 종교를 초월하는 조선후기 역사문화 체험 공간 임을 강조하고 있다. 이웃종교를 이해하고 열린 종교문화를 이루어 나가기 위해 해야 할 일들이 무엇인가를 숙고하게 만드는 대목이다. ‘보편’의 뜻을 지닌 ‘가톨릭(catholic)’의 소명을 실천하는 기관이 되기 위해서 서소문성지역사박물관은 무엇을 어떻게 해야 하는가? 이것이 본 연구 과제에 주어진 핵심 질문이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to identify the current status of the newly founded Seosomun Shrine History Museum by the review and analysis of its establishment process. The Museum is located in the area that was called Crossroad outside Seosomun since Choseon Dynasty, remembered as the largest commercial area in Hanseong-bu “Seongjeosiplee” (4 km from the Fortress Wall) and as the largest Korean martyrdom. Thus, the ‘spacial’ and ‘historical’ nature of this area will be the basis for defining the identity of the museum. This study takes up the theme Museum, Local Community and Heritage Interpretation , proposed by the Korea Museum Society during the opening of its 42nd Conference, which constitutes one of the theoretical frameworks for seeking the direction of the museum. Today museums are receiving a stronger, unprecedented request for change. Museums have been recognized as educational institutions of the society which reflect on their past role as tools at the service of ruling ideologies and power, cope with contemporary social issues and protect the value of public service and diversity. Although Seosomun Shrine History Museum is operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, the Bishop has acknowledged the museum as “a space for historical and cultural experience of the Late Choseon Dynasty transcending religion”. It is a statement that induces us to ponder about what to do in order to understand different religions and build a true religion culture. The question of this study is what the museum has to do, and how, in order to function as an institution that practices the mission of Catholicism, i.e. ‘Universality’.
