빛과 공간을 활용한 로버트 어윈의 현상적 예술 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 빛과 공간을 다루는 예술가 로버트 어윈(Robert Irwin, 1928-)이 제시한 ‘현상적 예술(phenomenal art)’개념과 특성을 고찰하고 빛을 활용하여 공간에 대한 우리의 감각과 의 식을 새롭게 하려는 그의 예술적인 전망을 재조명하고자 한다. 어윈은 추상화가로 출발하여 미니멀리즘의 단계를 거치면서 한편으로는 모리스 메를로-퐁티(Maurice Merleau-Ponty)의 현상학에 의거하여 관람자의 신체의 이동, 시각의 변화, 공간의 지각 경험에 대한 자신의 예 술개념인 ‘현상적 예술’ 개념을 형성하였다. 그는 1970년대 후반 이래 빛을 사용하여 관람자 와 작품이 놓이는 공간을 모호한 상황으로 제시하여 관람자의 지각 경험을 확장시키는 ‘현상 적 예술’을 추구해왔다. 그는 이러한 작업에서 빛과 공간적 조건이 융합되는 특성을 강조하고 이를 ‘조건적 예술(conditional art)’이라고 설명한다. 어윈은 자신의 작업을 장소에 인위적으로 개입시키는 것을 피하고, 원래 장소의 특성과 아름다움을 그대로 드러내어 관람자가 주체적 으로 공간에 대한 지각 변화를 경험할 수 있는 작업을 제시하고자 한다. 그는 관람자가 공간 에 대해 새롭게 인식하는 과정을 통해 주변의 일상적 공간을 새롭게 인식하게 하고 우리의 지각 경험의 폭과 층위를 확장시키고자 한다. 본 연구는 빛을 매체로 사용한 작가로 주로 논 의되어온 어윈의 작업을 그의 ‘현상적 예술’의 철학적 의미를 고찰함으로써 그의 작업이 추구 하는 예술적 취지를 심도있게 재고한다. 그는 지각 경험에 있어서의 위계질서를 상정하는 권 위적인 범주의 구분을 허무는데 있어 빛을 적극적으로 사용한다. 그의 ‘현상적 예술’은 우리 가 공간을 새롭게 지각하고 인식해가는 과정을 통해 다양한 지각 경험을 일깨우고 일상의 소 중함을 재인식하게 하는 것을 추구한다. 본 연구는 공간에 대한 우리의 인식을 새롭게 하고 지각 경험을 확장시켜, 궁극적으로는 우리가 새로운 시각으로 더 많은 것을 볼 수 있도록 눈 을 열게 하고자 하는 어윈 작업의 의미를 재고하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the concept and characteristics of the ‘phenomenal art’ proposed by Robert Irwin(b.1928). Having worked with light and space, Irwin intends to reform our spatial perception through light. Started his career as an abstract painter and gone through a Minimalist stage, Irwin developed his artistic concept of ‘phenomenal art,’ which pertains to the spectator’s body movement, changes of viewing points, and perceptual experience of the space. Drawing on Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and employing light as medium, Irwin has explored the ‘phenomenal art’ in order to expand the spectator’s perceptual experiences by providing a vague situation in which a spectator encounters a work. He also explains his work as ‘conditional art’ by stressing the integration of light and space in a given condition. He avoids intentional interventions of a site with his work. Rather, he tries to reveal the innate character and beauty of the site, thereby allowing a spectator to experience the site on his or her own. He believes that a new way to perceive a space would help expand the spectator’s perceptual experiences. Irwin has been often discussed a light artist who utilizes Minimalist vocabularies. Yet this study looks into a philosophical meaning of his ‘phenomenal art’ and examines his artistic intention in depth. For Irwin, light is an essential medium that helps break down the hierarchy in perception. His ‘phenomenal art’ seeks to reawaken the spectator’s perceptual experiences and to encourage the spectator to appreciate the significance of ordinary life experiences. By helping the spectator expand perceptual experiences of space, it ultimately aims to open the spectator’s eye to see more with a newer vision.
