철기의 조합양상을 통해 본 지역집단과 구성원

국문 초록

본고는 분묘 부장철기의 기종별 조합양상을 분석해 고분 피장자와 집단의 사회적 성격과 역할에 대해 추론하였다. 철기의 조합양상에 대해서는 통계학적 방법을 사용하여 ① 철기 기종별 부장빈도 ② 철기의 조합 수별기종조합 빈도 ③ 각 조합 수를 구분하는 기종 등 세 가지 조건의 빈도분석을 진행하였다. 그 결과 부장철기 중에서는 분묘에 보편적으로 부장되는 기종과 그렇지 않은 기종이 확인되었다. 그리고 각 특정한 조합 수에서만 부장되는 기종이 나타나는 것이 확인되었다. 이는 기종별로 소유의 제한을 통한 위계차를 반영하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 철기의 조합양상을 가지고 A~F 6개의 유형을 설정하고 지역 내 각 집단과 구성원의 변천과정에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 결과 시기별로 각 계층유형의 등장과 소멸의 양상이 관찰되며 금관가야 사회구조의 발전과 쇠퇴를 통시적으로 관찰할 수 있었다. 6개의 설정된 유형을 가지고 각 집단의 사회적 역할과 성격을 추론하였다. 이를 위해 취락, 산성, 생산시설 등의 생활유적을 연계하여 살펴보았다. 그 결과 각 집단은 자신들이 맡은 사회적 역할과 특성에 따라 집단의 구성원들도 집단의 역할을 맡은 특정유형들로 구성됨을 알 수 있다. 이는 철기가 단순히 분묘의 례품이 아닌 피장자가 생전에 직접적으로 사용한 도구였음을 알 수 있으며, 이를 통해 분묘에 부장된 철기가 위계성뿐만 아니라 피장자의 사회 내 직능과 역할도 나타내는 것임을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper considers the social identity and role of the deceased, as well as the local group to which he or she belonged, by analyzing the nature of the ironware assemblage identified in burials. A statistical method was adopted in this study and the frequency of the three following conditions was analyzed: ② frequency of deposition for each iron type, ① frequency of each ironware combination, and ③ the ironware type used to identify each combination. The results of the analysis demonstrated that certain types of ironware were universally deposited in burials, whereas certain other types were not. It was also possible to confirm that certain iron types occurred only in association with certain combinations. This indicates that social differentation may have been expressed through the selective ownership of certain ironware types. Six ironware assemblage types (Types A to F) were established, based on which diachronic change in the nature of local groups and their members was identified. As a result, patterns of emergence and disappearance could be observed for the different ironware assemblage types, and through this the development and decline of the social structure of Geumgwan Gaya system could be traced over time. The social identity and role of each group, represented by the respective ironware assemblage types, was inferred. For this purpose, neighboring sites where everyday activities took place, such as settlements, mountain fortresses, and production sites, were examined. It was possible to identify, as a result, that the different ironware assemblage types represented different communities within the local group, which were defined by different social roles and characteristics. This indicates that the ironware artifacts deposited in burials were not merely ritual objects associated with funerary practices, but rather objects that had been used by the deceased in their daily lives. It may be suggested, accordingly, that ironware artifacts deposited as grave graves are not only indicators of social hierarchy but also of the social role and function of the deceased.
