영문 초록

For the purpose of evaluating the relationship between schizophrenia and brain stem dysfunction, the author applied Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Potential(BAEP) to 18 schizophrenics who had been treated at the department of neuropsychiatry of Kyung Hee University Hospital from March 1988 through February 1989 and applied BAEP to same numbers of age and sex matched controls. The BAEP was checked in schizophrenics within 1 week after admission and re-checked after the schizophrenic symptoms were markedly improved. The degree of improvement was evaluated by using brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS). The summery of results were as follows; 1) There was no significant relationship between the auditory hallucination and BAEP in the schizophrenic group. 2) Although there were significant differences in the wave I and III lateneies between the pretreatment schizophrenic and control groups and wave I, III and V latencies between the posttreatment schizophrenic and control groups, these prolongations of the wave I，III and V latencies in schizophrenic group were within normal limit, and there was no significant latency changes between pretreatment and posttreatment schizophrenic groups. 3) There were no significant difference in the M il, III-V and I-V interpeak latencies between the schizophrenic and control groups, and also in the wave III, V amplitude and right- left ear gap difference between the schizophrenic and control groups. Above findings suggest that the schizophrenic symptoms including auditory hallucination are not closely related to the brain stem dysfunction.
