국문 초록

국내에서 처음으로 시도되는 이 연구는 Q 방법론을 활용하여 환대·관광 관련 대학원생들이 주관적으로 인식하는 석사학위 작성 과정에서의 어려움 유형을 도출하고 유형별 특성을 분석하였다. Q 표본은 선행연구 고찰과 유학생 심층면담을 통해 도출된 47개의 Q 진술문으로, P 표본은 전국 9개 대학에 재학 혹은 졸업한 일반대학원생 30명으로 구성되었다. Q 분류 분석결과, 4개 어려움 유형이 도출되었다. 유형 1은 자신의 능력이 부족하여 논문이 계획대로 되지 않아 자책하고 어려움을 겪는 ‘능력 부족 자책형’이다. 유형 2는 논문작성 과정에서 한국어로 글쓰기가 혼란스럽고 어려움을 겪는 한국어 글쓰기 부담형이다. 유형 3은 논문작성에 있어 어려움과 난관이 있지만 시작한 일을 포기하지 않고 끝까지 완수하는 끈기 있는 특성을 보여주는 ‘어려움 극복 노력형’이다. 유형 4는 논문 진행 과정의 다양한 측면에서 부담을 느끼는 ‘논문 진행 부담형’이다. 이 연구는 교육 관련 연구범위를 확장했으며, 향후 유학생의 논문지도와 관련해 학교와 교수 측면에서 고려해야 할 유용한 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study, the first of its kind in Korea, employed Q methodology to identify the types of difficulties subjectively perceived by hospitality and tourism management-related graduate students in the master's thesis writing process and to analyze the characteristics of each type. The Q sample consisted of 47 Q statements derived through a review of previous research and in-depth interviews with international students. The P sample comprised 30 graduate students who were either currently enrolled in or had graduated from nine universities across the country. As a result of the Q classification analysis, four difficulty types were derived. The Q classification analysis identified four distinct type of difficulties. Type 1 is the ‘self-blame due to lack of ability’ type, in which students blame themselves and suffer because their thesis does not go as planned due to their lack of ability. Type 2 is the ‘burden of writing in Korean’ type, where writing in Korean is confusing and difficult during the thesis writing process. Type 3 is the ‘perseverance in overcoming difficulties’ type, which shows perseverance in completing the work to the end without giving up even though there are difficulties and obstacles in writing the thesis. Type 4 is the ‘overall thesis burden’ where people feel burdened in various aspects of the thesis process. The study expands the scope of education-related research and provides valuable practical implications for universities and faculty members in guiding international students through the thesis-writing process.
