국문 초록

예이츠는 1798년의 아일랜드 항쟁과 1916년 부활절 봉기의 민족 항쟁들을 직접적으로 언급한 두 편의 정치 극을 집필하였는데, 두 작품은 상징과 은유의 기법을 통해 정치적 의미들을 가지는 예이츠의 다른 드라마와는 다르다. 두 작품 『캐서린 훌리언』과 『죽은 자들의 꿈』의 비교는 두 작품이 비슷한 정치 주제를 어떻게 다르게 접근하는지를 밝히기 위한 시도다. 예이츠의 초기에 쓴 작품은 정치색이 너무 강한 한편 후에 쓴 작품은 자신의 시학을 펴기 위해 정치를 이용할 뿐이다.

영문 초록

Yeats wrote two political plays that make direct references to Irish insurrections—the Rebellion of 1798 and the Easter Rising of 1916 respectively—which differ from his other plays with some political implications, usually found in symbols and metaphors. The comparison between Cathleen Ni Houlihan (1902) and The Dreaming of the Bones (1919), both being directly political, demonstrates how politics plays a role in the making of each play: The first play is motivated by a strong sense of a nation in trouble, while the second play makes slight use of politics to further develop Yeats’s own sense of poetics.
