상징조형물을 통한 도시 이미지의 예술적 재현: ‘원이엄마’ 조형물 <아가페상> 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

원이엄마편지는 죽음을 극복하려는 인간적인 의미와 숭고한 사랑을 담고 있는 기록자료이다. 이 편지에는 사랑하는남편에 대한 한 여인의 애틋한 감정이 매력적인 단어와 문체로 쓰여있다. 이 편지는 아내가 남편을 향한 당당하고 솔직한사랑 표현과 수평적 부부관계를 파악할 수 있는 매우 특별한 기록물이다. 그러나 원이엄마편지를 모티프로 한 원이엄마콘텐츠는 조선시대 여인에게 부과되었던 전근대적 여성상으로서의 ‘원이엄마’에서 벗어나지 않는다. 원이엄마콘텐츠는 <450년 만의 외출>, <능소화>, <원이엄마> 세 편의 소설의 캐릭터와 서사를 중심으로 오페라 2편, 뮤지컬 3편, 애니메이션1편, 영화 1편, 무용극과 테마파크로 각색, 변주되어 개발되었다. 특히, 원이엄마편지를 모티프로 제작된 조형물 <아가페상>은 김장동의 소설 <450년 만의 외출>에서 ‘다영’(원이엄마)의 캐릭터를 시각화한 모습이다. 전통적인 사회에서 이상적인 여성상이 오늘 우리에게 어떤 의미가 있는 걸까? 상징조형물이 관광객들에게 순간적인 자극과 정보를 제공하는것 이외에 어떤 공감의 지점을 만들고 있는지 되돌아볼 필요가 있다. 원이엄마편지를 모티프로 한 조형물이 오늘의 우리에게 어떤 공감의 의미를 만들고, 경험시킬 수 있을지 고민이 필요한 시점이다. 도시 간에 차별화된 이미지 경쟁은 무분별한 조형물 설치로 이어지고 있으며, 이러한 상징조형물들은 예술적 시각언어로 작동하기보다는 특정한 사건, 인물, 문화자원의 지시적 기호에 그치고 있다. 상징조형물을 통해 도시가 재현된다는 것은 그 도시에 대한 어떤 의미를 부여하는것을 넘어서, 현실에 대한 이해를 제공하며, 동시에 그것을 둘러싸고 있는 다양한 사회관계의 맥락들을 살펴볼 수 있는개념 틀을 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 본 연구는 이러한 맥락에서 ‘원이엄마’ 조형물의 비판적 고찰하고, 조형물의 예술적재현을 통해 도시 이미지를 성공적으로 구축하고 있는 독일 베를린과 폴란드 브로츠와프의 사례를 비교 분석하였다.

영문 초록

The Woni's Mother Letters are historical records that encapsulate humanistic meanings of overcoming death and sublime love. Furthermore, these letters not only reveal a rare glimpse into a horizontal marital relationship during the Joseon Dynasty but also portray the affectionate emotions of a wife towards her husband through compelling expressions and a bold literary style. However, the Woni's Mother content inspired by these letters largely adheres to the idealized image of a Joseon-era woman as assigned by traditional gender roles, failing to break away from that framework. The Woni's Mother content has been developed and adapted into various forms, including three novels (450 Years’ Journey to the Outside World, Nungsohwa, and Woni's Mother), two operas, three musicals, one animated film, a live-action movie, dance performances, and even a theme park. Among these, the memorial sculpture Agape is a visual representation of the character “Dayoung” (Woni's Mother) as depicted in Kim Jang-dong's novel 450 Years’ Journey to the Outside World. This raises a question: what does the idealized female image of a traditional society signify for us today? It is crucial to reconsider whether the Woni's Mother content fosters any meaningful empathy beyond momentary stimulation or informational value for tourists. The competition for a distinctive image among cities has led to the installation of indiscriminate sculptures, which, rather than functioning as an artistic visual language, are merely indicative symbols of specific events, people, and cultural resources. The representation of a city through symbolic sculptures should not only give a certain meaning to the city, but also provide an understanding of its reality, and at the same time, provide a conceptual framework for examining the various contexts of social relations that surround it. In this context, this study critically examines the ‘Wonimama’ sculpture and compares the cases of Berlin, Germany and Wrocław, Poland, which have successfully constructed city images through the artistic reproduction of the sculpture.
