국문 초록

공상과학(science fiction) 장르는 미래의 가능성에 대한 탐구이다. 인간신체의 완벽함에 대한 실험, 인간 본성에 관한 수백 년 된 믿음의 붕괴로 인한 도덕적 패닉, 유전적 그리고 신경계적 자본의 착취적이며 이윤추구적인 접근방식에 대한 미래를 공상과학 장르에서 읽어낼 수 있다. 영화 『가타카』(GATTACA, 1997)는 과학개념을 매개로 미래 사회에 대한 질문을 던진다. 영화에서 던지는 질문은 우리가 현 시점에서 발견하고 있는 유전자 조작과 같은 과학적인 힘을 어떻게 사용하여 살아갈 수 있을지에 대한 것이다. 작품 속에 나타나는 유전적 결정론(genetic determinism)과 우생학(eugenics)은 독특한 문제제기를 한다. 『가타카』는 우생학과 관련된 생명윤리 문제를 다루는데, 이것은 유전적 결정론을 사회에서 수용한 것으로 비롯된 것임을 시사해주는 것이다. 본질적으로 『가타카』는 유전자가 지배하는 세상을 묘사하는 유전 과학자들이 구축한 블랙박스에서 벗어나고자 한다. 이것은 유전자의 중요성을 부정하거나 기술 자체를 비난하는 것이 아니라, 인간이 유전자에 불과하다고 믿을 때에 발생할 수 있는 문제점을 경고한다는 의미이다.

영문 초록

The genre of science fiction is an exploration of the possibilities of the future. The future of experiments on the perfection of the human body, the moral panic caused by the collapse of centuries-old beliefs about human nature, and the exploitative and profit-seeking approaches of genetic and neurological capital can be read in the genre. The film Gattaca(1997) raises questions about the future society through the concept of science. The question posed by the film is how we can live using the scientific powers, such as genetic manipulation, that we are discovering at this point. Genetic determinism and eugenics that appear in the film raise unique questions. Gattaca addresses bioethical issues related to eugenics, suggesting that this stems from the acceptance of genetic determinism in society. In essence, Gattaca seeks to escape the black box constructed by genetic scientists who describe a world dominated by genes. This is not to deny the importance of genes or to condemn technology itself, but to warn of the problems that can arise when humans believe that they are nothing more than genes.
