국문 초록

뮤지컬은 현대 사회에서 기독교 신앙과 성경 메시지를 전달하는 중요한 매체로 자리 잡았다. 음악, 연기, 춤을 결합한 뮤지컬은 관객들에게 강렬한 감정적 몰입을 제공하며 성경 이야기를 보다 생생하고 공감 가능하게 만든다. 전통적인 설교나 교육 방식과 달리 뮤지컬은 스토리텔링과 시각적 효과를 통해 관객들이 성경의 메시지를 개인적이고 감정적으로 경험할 수 있도록 돕는다. 본 연구는 기독교와 공연 예술의 역사적 관계를 탐구하며 뮤지컬이 문화 선교와 영적 성찰의 도구로서 어떻게 발전해 왔는지를 분석한다. 특히 지저스 크라이스트 수퍼스타는 현대 록 오페라 형식을 통해 예수의 생애를 재해석하며 관객들에게 복잡한 신학적 질문을 던지고 있으며, 갓스펠은 마태복음을 생동감 있는 음악과 안무로 표현하여 복음의 가르침을 현대적으로 전달한다. 또한 한국 창작 뮤지컬 마리아 마리아는 막달라 마리아의 삶을 중심으로 구원과 회복이라는 주제를 다루며 관객들에게 깊은 감동을 준다. 본 연구는 뮤지컬이 음악과 춤을 활용하여 신학적 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하는 방식을 고찰하며, 성경 이야기가 현대 사회와 어떻게 연결될 수 있는지를 탐구한다. 뮤지컬은 단순히 과거의 종교극에 머무르지 않고 현대적 감각과 대중문화를 결합하여 성경의 진리를 보다 친숙하고 이해하기 쉽게 전달한다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 가진다. 또한 뮤지컬은 공동체 형성과 집단적 영적 경험을 촉진하는 매개체로 작용하며 교회 내외에서 복음을 전파하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 특히 기술 발전과 글로벌화된 문화 환경 속에서 뮤지컬은 더욱 풍부한 시각적·청각적 경험을 제공하며 다양한 문화권에 맞춘 작품들이 제작되고 있다. 이러한 변화는 기독교 신앙이 문화적 다양성을 존중하며 더 넓은 관객층에게 다가갈 수 있는 가능성을 열어준다. 본 연구는 뮤지컬이 단순히 예술적 표현에 그치지 않고 복음을 전파하고 신앙적 변화를 이끄는 강력한 도구로 기능할 수 있음을 강조한다. 앞으로도 기독교와 뮤지컬 간의 협력은 더욱 강화될 것이며 이를 통해 다양한 배경을 가진 사람들이 복음 메시지를 접하고 신앙 여정을 시작할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Musical theater has become a significant medium for expressing Christian faith and communicating biblical messages in contemporary society. By integrating music, acting, and dance, musicals provide an emotionally immersive experience that allows audiences to connect deeply with biblical narratives. Unlike traditional methods of teaching or preaching, musicals use storytelling, visual effects, and dynamic performances to engage audiences on a personal and emotional level. This study delves into the historical relationship between Christianity and performance arts, focusing on the evolution of musicals as a tool for evangelism and spiritual reflection. It analyzes notable examples such as Jesus Christ Superstar, which reinterprets the life of Jesus through modern rock opera; Godspell, which brings the teachings of Matthew’s Gospel to life with vibrant music and choreography; and Maria Maria, a Korean musical that explores themes of redemption and transformation through the story of Mary Magdalene. The research further examines how musicals effectively convey theological messages by combining traditional biblical themes with modern cultural elements. Through music, dance, and storytelling, musicals bridge the gap between ancient scripture and contemporary audiences, making biblical truths more relatable and accessible. Additionally, this study highlights the cultural impact of musicals as tools for community building and fostering collective spiritual experiences. By engaging diverse audiences across different cultural contexts, Christian-themed musicals have demonstrated their potential to transcend religious boundaries while maintaining their core theological messages. As technological advancements in stage design and digital media continue to enhance the visual and auditory appeal of musical theater, its role as a medium for cultural evangelism is expected to grow. Globalization has further enabled the adaptation of biblical-themed musicals to resonate with diverse cultural backgrounds, expanding their reach beyond traditional church settings. This study concludes that musical theater not only serves as an artistic expression of faith but also as a transformative tool for spreading the gospel in innovative ways. The collaboration between Christianity and musicals is anticipated to deepen in the future, offering new opportunities to share Christian teachings with wider audiences worldwide.
