소로우의 오두막에 사는 안토니아: 『월든』의 관점에서 『나의 안토니아』 다시 읽기

국문 초록

윌라 캐더의 네브래스카 삼부작 중의 하나인 『나의 안토니아』는 자연과 인간이 조화를 이루며 환경 그 자체가 되는 생태학적 상상력을 구현하려는 대표적인 작품으로 평가된다. 인간은 노동을 통해서 자연의 일부로서 생태환경과 상호작용을 하며 존재하기 때문에, 이런 생태학적 이상을 구현하기 위해서는 인간의 노동은 가장 핵심적인 요소라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 안토니아가 행한, 시장과 자본을 위한 것이 아닌, 자연 친화적인 본질적 노동의 진정한 의미와 가치에 대해 소설 속에서 충분히 다루어지지 않았다고 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면 소설의 유일한 화자인 짐 버든은 비록 중서부 초원에서 안토니아와 함께 보낸 어린 시절의 추억을 공유하고 있지만, 거대 자본을 위해 일하는 변호사로서, 안토니아의 본질적 노동을 이해하는 데 한계가 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이 논문은 대초원의 자연과 조화를 이루는 가족농장을 개척한 안토니아의 본질적 노동에 관해 헨리 데이비드 소로우가 그의 대표작인 『월든』에서 논한 생태적인 노동에 관한 담화를 바탕으로 논하려 한다. 소로우는 “자발적 가난”의 정신으로 콩코드의 월든 호숫가에서 오두막을 짓고, 타락하고 과도한 노동이 아닌 자연과 상호교감하는 본질적인 노동을 하면서 “인간 존재의 근본적인 법칙”을 추구하고 “삶을 모든 정수”를 이해하고자 하였다. 이렇게 볼 때 안토니아와 소로우는 자연 속에서 단순하지만, 자족적인 삶을 실현하기 위해 본질적 노동을 실행한다는 의미에서 생태환경주의의 진정한 가치를 공유하고 있다.

영문 초록

My Antonia has been critically celebrated as one of Willa Cather’s Nebraskan novels of the ecological ideal in which humanity and nature harmoniously go together to compose the environment itself. To achieve this ecological ideal of para-human environmentalism, the labor of the human being works as the most essential factor since it is the activity of labor by which human beings as part of nature interact with nature to subsist in the natural environment. However, the true meanings and values of the nature-friendly intrinsic labor, not the alienated market-oriented one, accomplished by Antonia Shimerda, the pioneering protagonist of the novel, have not been sufficiently explored in My Antonia because the ecological and existential significance of her intrinsic labor on the Nebraskan prairie cannot be truly appreciated by Jim Burden, who is the sole narrator of the novel. Although Jim shares the childhood memory with Antonia in the Midwestern prairie, he has pursued an upper-class career of big-business lawyer, so that he would not be able to understand the importance of Antonia’s intrinsic labor. Therefore, this essay attempts to analyze the essential meanings of Antonia’s intrinsic labor for pioneering her family farm on the Great Prairie, which is in dynamic harmony with nature itself, in light of Henry David Thoreau’s ecological discourse of labor in his Walden. By building a cabin with the spirit of “voluntary poverty” on the shore of Walden Pond in Concord, he pursued “the essential laws of man’s existence” and wanted to define “all the marrow of life” by doing intrinsic labor, not deprecated and excessive one. In this regard, Antonia and Thoreau share the true value of ecological environmentalism in their works of practicing intrinsic labor for achieving simple but self-sufficient independent life in nature.
