국문 초록

Miguel Street is one of V.S. Naipaul’s representative works, depicting the lives of ordinary residents on Miguel Street in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The 10th chapter of the novel, The Maternal Instinct, portrays the main character Laura and others. Although Laura is a biology teacher living in extreme poverty, she often preoccupied with motherhood and seducing men. The novel reveals the complexity and contradiction of her character, and also reflected a lack of ideals and cultural belonging. The language of the characters is a crucial means of expressing their personalities, and translators must employ appropriate strategies to ensure that the translation retains the characters’ individuality and emotional depth. This analysis will pay special attention to the crude language and rhetorical techniques in the original text, aiming to faithfully recreate the characters and their cultural backgrounds. Through effective translation, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the characters’ inner worlds and social contexts. The selected material for translation is Chapter Ten, The Maternal Instinct. This analysis includes the author’s own translation (TT 1) and Zhang Qi’s translation (TT 2) as the texts for comparison. The author emphasizes that, during the translation process, translators must first grasp the novel’s characteristics, including character development, rhetorical techniques, language style, and narrative perspective. Translators should flexibly employ methods such as literal translation, free translation, and amplification to accurately reflect the original text’s language features of characters, rhetorical devices, language style and narrative perspective.

영문 초록

《米格尔大街》是奈保尔的代表作之一，描绘了特立尼达首府西班牙港米格尔街上普通居民的生活。小说第十章The Maternal Instinct 刻画了女主角劳拉等角色。劳拉虽身为生物教师，生活处于极度贫困中，却常常沉迷于生育和勾引男人。小说展现了角色的复杂性和矛盾性，也缺乏理想和文化归属感。人物的语言是体现人物性格的重要手段，译者需采用恰当策略，确保译文保留人物的个性和情感深度。本文将关注原作中的粗俗语言和修辞手法，力求忠实再现人物形象和文化背景。通过有效的翻译，读者能够更好地理解角色的内心世界与社会环境。翻译素材选取的是第十章The Maternal Instinct，译文选取了笔者自译本（译文1）和张琪译本（译文2 ）作为分析文本。笔者强调在翻译过程中，译者首先需要把握好小说的特点，包括人物塑造、修辞手法、语言风格和叙事视角，译者需灵活运用直译、意译和增译等方法，再现原文角色的语言特点、修辞手法、语言风格和叙事视角等。
